Page 93 of Heart Break Her

Cassie’s fingers fidget in her lap as she stares out the window. She’s been distant since last night, and even if she swears she’s not upset with me, I’m not sure it’s the truth. There was something about the look in her eyes when all the groupies were circling in.

I never used to think much of it—signing tits, making polite conversation, fucking them when I needed to get my rocks off. Besides music, they were my favorite perk of this profession.

Except now, I want them all to go the fuck away before it sends Cassie over the edge. I don’t want them, or anyone except for Cassie. There’s got to at least be some fans left who actually give a shit about my music, right? Where are all of them right now?

Maybe I am just like my father. Only good for two things: getting wasted and fucking people over.

“Are you sure he knows where he’s going?” Cassie asks, keeping her voice low so Boris can’t hear her. Except he does, and I spot him smiling as he tries to pretend otherwise.

“He knows.”

Cassie presses her lips together, and her eyebrows do that crinkle that catches me off guard every time.

“Okay because this is really far outside the city. There’s a lot of trees.” Her eyes take in the scenery as we wind along the road.

“Trust me,” I say, reaching for her hand, relieved when she laces her fingers through mine and holds it.

“I do.”

Those two words slither in without warning and burrow into the infected parts of my head. They make me want to bare my soul and admit everything. But once Cassie knows the truth about what happened with her brother, I’m not sure she’ll ever look at me again. So even if I know I need to tell her before she leaves, I’m not ready yet.

“Is that,” Cassie looks out the window and her eyes go wide, “a resort?”

I shake my head. “Not exactly. It’s my house.”

“Your…” Cassie looks from me to the house and back again. “You’re kidding me, right? This is not where I expected you to live. I mean, you’re a rock star.”

“Expecting a dark cave or an evil rock star lair or something?” I laugh.

“More like a penthouse with stripper poles.” She smiles, and the ease of it relaxes my tense shoulders just enough that I don’t feel like I’m crawling out of my skin.

I knew all the pot and booze was getting bad, but I hadn’t realized exactly how bad. Because sitting here sober is harder than I expected it to be. And if that isn’t enough for me to slow things down, then I don’t know what is.

“Sorry to disappoint. No sex dungeon, and no stripper poles. There’s enough of those on the road,” I say, and Cassie laughs. “I needed something quiet.”

Cassie climbs out of the car and takes it all in. “Well, this will do it. It’s incredible, Sebastian.”

Walking around the car, she slides up to my side and wraps her arm through mine, nestling into the spot against my body that feels like it was meant for her.

Not many people have been to my house, but it feels right that she’s here. If she’s going to be gone soon, I need to make her a part of everything first.

I’ll light the match and enjoy the flames, right before they eat me up.

“Whenever we have a couple days off, this is where I go,” I tell her.

Cassie looks up at me with a smile. “Is this one of those if-I-tell-you-then-I-have-to-kill-youkind of secrets, then I swear the location of your secret hideaway is safe.” She lifts her fingers to her lips and pretends to zip them.

“Guess we’ll see.” I move myself behind her, pulling her back flush with my chest before I lean in to bite her neck, which forces a squeal out of her. She wiggles, but I just hold her tighter.

“Sebastian.” She swats at me.

Boris is coming back out of the house after dropping our bags inside and tips his chin before climbing in the car and driving away.

“Okay, now I’m getting worried,” she says, not looking worried at all. “Did I just get stranded in the middle of nowhere with a rock star? Because I hear that’s highly dangerous.”

I grab her hand and start walking her to the house. “Yes and no. I have a few cars in the garage so, if you wanted to, you could still escape. But I have no plans of letting that happen.”

“Oh, really?” A grin widens on her face.
