I feel the depth of his words. He’s not talking about getting here, specifically. To tonight. He’s talking about surviving all that’s happened in the past year and making it to the other side.
“I have a confession to make,” Sebastian says.
He tips his head back and my eyes pinch. Something is different. It’s rare he talks to the crowd in the middle of the show, and tonight isn’t following the normal set list.
“There’s a girl,” Sebastian says, and the screams get wilder than I’d expect with him admitting something like that. “She asked me recently if people write love letters anymore, and honestly, they probably don’t.”
He tips his head down and smiles, like he can’t believe he’s saying this.
“But maybe I’m wrong. Because this girl is like fucking music being written in my head. Every little thing she does is another lyric,” he says. “So maybe we spend our lives writing love letters to the people we care about. Through laughs, love, sex.”
The last word gets Sebastian a lot of screams from the crowd.
“But maybe only the bravest of us say them on paper or out loud.”
He rests the microphone down at his side and looks out into the audience, his honey-brown eyes meeting mine. I’m surrounded by twenty thousand people, but there’s only one.
And as Sebastian lifts his microphone again, something lights up on the screen behind the band. An angel reaching up to heaven as she’s consumed by the flames of hell. My drawing’s filling the screen in bright lights.
“I’ve never written a love letter before,” Sebastian says, looking straight at me with a smile. “But this one’s for you.”
His wink pierces my heart, cuts through the armor surrounding it. As he sings, I fall for him all over again.
“Girl with the pink hair, haunting my dreams
Breaking my heart, every time she leaves
Breaking apart the pieces
The pieces
In me
Girl smells like summer in the middle of a storm
Hope that existed, that I never needed more
Girl close your eyes, the countdown’s begun
I’ll wish it
You’ll be it
Let’s rise with the sun
I’ll be your puzzle if you don’t mind
Put me together if you have the time
And I’ll put you together
One piece at a time
We’ll be together
Be mine
Girl you’re tired, I’m tired
