“How about both?”
Cassie rakes her fingers over her scalp, pulling her blonde hair back and off her shoulders and showing off her gorgeous neck.
“Well, in general, I just graduated college last week.”
“Congratulations.” I tip my head at her.
She nods. “But that means I haven’t had much of a life for the last four years.”
“I thought college was supposed to be where you let loose?” I wouldn’t know since I skipped that step.
She shrugs. “For some people. But…” She pauses for a moment and chews on the inside of her cheek again. “I didn’t have the option.”
I take another drag, getting the hint there’s more behind her answer, and also that I shouldn’t ask.
“Fair enough,” I say with an exhale of smoke. “And what about tonight?”
“My friend Merry is on your crew, she got me a ticket to the show as a graduation present. I was here with her.”
“Mercedes?”
Cassie nods.
“Badass fucking chick.”
“That’s the one.” Cassie let’s out a throaty laugh I wouldn’t mind drinking from her mouth.
How can a woman be so gorgeous and understated at the same time?
“Want a hit?” I hold my hand out and offer her the joint. She turned it down earlier, but she looks tense as fuck so I’m not surprised when she reaches for it this time.
“Thanks,” she says, taking it from my hand and putting it to her lips, inhaling a drag that tells me it’s not her first time, before handing it back to me.
“Well, that explains your seat.”
Her eyebrows crinkle. “What seat?”
“Front and center at the show. The front row at small gigs is usually filled with people fucking a band member or a roadie. Sometimes friends.”
Her lips turn down, and she shakes her head.
“Not saying—”
“I know,” she says, but I can feel some kind of wall going up from my comment.
I’m not used to caring what stupid shit flows out of my mouth. It’s one of the perks of being who I am. Either by my name or the fact that I’m generally too messed up to care what people think about what I’m saying. But Cassie feels… different.
“How about that movie?” I jump up and hold out a hand. I’m smart enough to know if I keep talking, she’ll run for the hills at any second, so I need a distraction.
“Really?” Her eyebrows pinch. “I figured you were kidding about the movie. I mean, if you want me to go so you can get better company…”
“You’re fine company.”
“You’re Sebastian Kane,” she says, like there’s a valid argument behind it.
“So I’ve been told.”
“And you’re fine just watching a movie?” Her nose crinkles.
