“Yeah, well, see that you remember that.”
“Love you, Mikey.”
“Love you, too.”
Smiling, Rosa tossed her phone on the sofa. Maybe everything would work out, after all. Sofia and Micah didn’t seem as upset about her dating Jake as she had expected. Maybe Jake and Micah would even become friends. With that thought in mind, she went up to bed.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Rosa went to church Sunday morning, spent the afternoon with her parents, and a quiet evening with Kincaid.
“When’s the last time you went to church, Jake?” she asked during a lull in the conversation.
He looked at her, one brow raised. “Not since I was a slave in Drakos’ house.”
Astonished, she said, “The vampire took you to church?”
“He was a very religious man.”
“I don’t believe it.”
“It’s true. He’d been a strong Catholic before he was turned, and … ” Kincaid shrugged, “he dragged me to Mass every Sunday morning, until he turned me. Since he could be awake during the day, I imagine he went without me while I was at rest.”
“Did you ever go after that?”
“Once or twice.” Kincaid shook his head. “But it just didn’t seem relevant to me anymore. You go often, don’t you?”
“Not as often as I should.” She paused a moment before asking, “Would you go with me?”
“You must know I’d go anywhere you want.”
Rosa sighed as she snuggled against him. He really was the most amazing man.
Monday morning, Rosa let it be known she was quitting on Friday. She apologized for the short notice, saying there was no help for it, she was leaving the state. Everyone in the office said they would be sorry to see her go.
She went to lunch with Bria that afternoon.
“I can’t believe you’re leaving us,” Bria said. “What happened? I thought you liked your job.”
“I do, but, well, you might say I had a better offer.”
“Oh?” Bria leaned forward, her dark eyes alight with curiosity. “ From who?”
“Jake. We’re going to move in together.” She grinned as her friend’s eyebrows shot up to her hairline. “We’re going to share a house, not a bedroom.”
Bria rolled her eyes. “How long do you thinkthatwill last?”
“As long as I want it to,” Rosa said with a laugh.
“Well, I’ll miss you. And I’ll still expect you at my wedding. YouandMr. Right. I’ve gotta see this guy. Are you sure you don’t haveanypictures?”
Rosa shrugged. She needed to remedy that, she thought, and then wondered if it was even possible to photograph vampires.
It was the first thing she asked Jake when she saw him that night. She was surprised when he laughed. “What’s so funny?”
“You’re the first one whoever asked me that.”
“Well, what’s the answer?”
