“What was that all about?” Jake asked as the girl returned to her own lane.

“She wanted to know if you were famous.”

“Seriously?”

“Well, you are rather handsome, you know.”

“Yeah, right. You’re up.”

They bowled three games. Jake rolled a 260, a 275, and a 280. With her handicap, Rosa bowled a 250, a 245, and a 230.

“You could have let me win once,” she muttered as they returned their shoes to the desk.

“You wouldn’t want me to throw a game, would you?”

“Well, maybe just one.”

“Next time,” he said, as they left the alley. “Where would you like to go now?”

“I don’t care. Anything you’d like to do is fine with me.”

“Anything?” he asked with a wicked grin.

“Almostanything,” she amended when they reached the car.

He opened her door for her. “Let’s go home and neck.”

“Neck? Nobody uses that word anymore.”

“I’m an old-fashioned guy,” Kincaid said as he closed the door.

“Well, I guess you have been around a very long time,” she teased.

“Hey,” he growled, as he settled behind the wheel. “I’m very sensitive about my age.”

“I didn’t know.” she said, choking back a laugh. “I won’t mention it again. But just for the record, how old were you when you were turned?”

“Thirty-two,” he said, as he pulled out of the driveway onto the street.

“Wow, you reallyareold.”

She was grinning when they pulled up in front of her apartment. She would have to let the manager know she was moving. Being a stickler for rules, Mr. Evans would probably refuse to return her deposit, since she wasn’t giving him thirty days’ notice. But it couldn’t be helped. She also needed to hire a truck to transport her furniture to Morgan Creek.

Kincaid parked in the allotted visitor’s space, then turned to face her. “So, you’ve decided to move to Morgan Creek with me.”

She huffed an annoyed sigh. “I wanted to tell you.”

“Sorry. Sometimes your thoughts are so loud and clear, I can’t help reading them.”

“Well, stop it.”

“I’ll try.” He got out of the car and came around to open her door. Now that they had exchanged blood, it was almost impossible not to read her thoughts.

Inside, Rosa flipped on the lights, kicked off her shoes, and settled on the sofa.

“Are you mad at me?” Jake asked, sitting beside her.

“Terribly.” She wasn’t, of course.
