Kincaid barked a laugh. “Isthere anything you don’t know?”

“Time will tell. Come on. Let’s go find a couple of pretty women to take the edge off our thirst.”

Rosa had just stepped out of the bathtub when her cell phone rang. Wrapping a towel around her middle, she scooped up the phone, felt a trickle of excitement when she saw Kincaid’s name. She let it ring again so he wouldn’t think she had just been sitting around waiting for his call. Taking a deep breath, she said, “Hello?”

“Hey, lovely lady. How’s it going?”

“Very well, thank you.”

“You mad at me?”

“Why would I be mad?”

“You tell me.”

“I’m not mad.”

“What are you doing?”

“If you must know, I’m getting ready for bed.”

“Oh. I was hoping I could take you out for a nightcap.”

“It’s a little late for drinks.”

“Yeah, I guess it is.”

“I’d love some hot chocolate, though,” she said, a smile in her voice. “The kind they serve in town is really good.”

“Pick you up in ten minutes?”

She glanced at the puddle spreading at her feet. “Better make it fifteen.”

Butterflies of excitement fluttered in the pit of her stomach as she quickly pulled on clean underwear, a pair of jeans, a warm sweater, and a pair of boots. She ran a comb through her hair, brushed her teeth, and skipped down the stairs.

The doorbell rang two minutes later.

Kincaid whistled softly when he saw her. “Hi, gorgeous.”

“Hi, yourself.” He looked positively yummy in a pair of faded black jeans and a pale blue, long-sleeved tee shirt that clearly outlined his muscular arms and broad shoulders. It was all she could do to keep from throwing herself into his arms, she was that happy to see him.

“Are you ready?”

She nodded, felt a rush of heat when his fingers entwined with hers. “Let’s go.”

He transported the two of them to a place swathed in shadows behind the restaurant. Hand in hand, they walked around to the front and stepped inside. This late, there were only a few people inside. Rosa thought they were mostly married couples stopping for coffee on the way home from a late movie.

They found a table for two in the back.

“How was your day?” Kincaid asked.

Rosa stared at him, her gaze narrowed. Was he fishing for information about Rhinehart? How much did he know? “How was yours?” she countered.

“Quiet as the grave. Seriously, I missed you.”

“Did you?”

He nodded, his gaze searching hers.
