Page 52 of Surviving Midnight

“What’s going on here?” Spider walks over, his bright blue eyes bouncing between Theo and Lola. “Everything ok, ladies?”

“No!” Lola shrieks. “She called me a slut.”

Theo frowns. “No, I didn’t. Not yet anyway.”

Spider looks at me, then Prez and Marbles. “What’d I miss?”

“This horrible little bitch says I’m trying to sleep my way up the chain of command.” Lola feigns a pout and sidles up to Spider. “She called me a slut when you’re the only one I want.”

“Theo? Is that true?” He levels her with his icy stare and if I didn’t know him almost as well as I know myself, I’d intervene. Spider’s eyes are usually full of ice and it has nothing to do with his mood.

Blondie squares her shoulders. “I didn’t call her a slut but I heard her talking about using you to get to everyone else.” She flinches. “Sorry, Spider, but it’s true. Quite frankly, you can do a hell of a lot better than her anyway. You’re too sweet to let a vile she-devil drag you down.”

Spider blinks. His jaw drops a little, but he doesn’t speak.

Then all hell breaks loose.

Lola lunges at Theo, who successfully shoves both Harlow and Sofie toward their husbands, and while Lola tries again, my girl kicks off her stilettos, throws them at me and braces for impact.

Impact that never comes because Spider steps in and is now carrying Lola toward the front door.

“What are you doing?!”

“Taking out the trash.”

Lola screeches like a banshee. “You cannot believe that lying little bitch! She’s the one using Cy. She’s the one trying to fuck her way through the club. She’s nobody!”

Spider sets her down in front of the door, crosses his arms against his chest and stares down at her. Unblinking. Unflinching. Uncaring.

Thank God.

“I can’t believe you’d throw us away over the lies that girl just told!” Lola reaches out and places a hand on his arm. “You’re the only one for me, Spider. You know me. Don’t let her lies change—“

“How many prospects have you fucked now?”

She blinks, startled by the question. “What?”

“I’m not stupid, Lola. I know you’re always messing around with them.”

“I’m not! I can’t believe you’d do this to me, to us. What we have is special. Don’t throw it away over some stupid skinny little twat who wants everything she can’t have. Cy could do so much better than that conniving bitch, all of them could, and now you’re stupid enough to believe her over me?”

In a blur of black and blonde, Theo races past me so fast I can’t catch her, hops over a chair like a hurdle on a track then throws herself at Lola.

“Shut your lying mouth!” she yells as they go down to the ground. “You can talk shit about me all you want, but do not think so much as one negative thought about my friends.” Theo grabs a fistful of Lola’s hair as they roll. “Sofie and Harlow are amazing. And Spider is not stupid.”

Jesus.

I had no fucking clue Theo wasthatfeisty. Sure, Lola was talking shit but she hardly said anything worth acknowledging. Ultimately Spider would have kicked her out of the clubhouse, licked his wounds and moved on. I doubt Sofie or Harlow really care that Lola doesn’t think they’re good enough for a couple of assholes like Prez and Marbles, and I know Spider doesn’t give two shits about what anyone calls him. Mainly because his IQ is genius level, but still.

“Get off me!” Lola screeches and tries to scratch Theo’s cheek.

My girl doesn’t though, she just keeps her fist locked in Lola’s hair and slaps the bitch across the face. “Not until you promise to leave Spider and the rest of these nice people alone!”

“Fuck you!” Lola manages to flip them over again, Blondie’s head cracking against the floor as she tries to slap my girl and I’m eating up the wood floor to get to her. “These people aren’t nice. And you’re a goddamn eavesdropping little cunt.”

I’m less than six inches away, ready to grab this bitch myself and tear her off Theo so I can check her head when she fucking smiles up at Lola before she wrenches her head back so hard she yanks out a clump of her hair.

“There’s my proof, bitch.” Theo grins as Spider and I separate them. “You just told on yourself.”
