“What are you two doing!” The leader marched over to them and jerked them apart with his big blue paws. “Stop staring at each other.”
Adhi landed in the dirt.
Symphony cried out in pain as his rough handling tore at her nano-tech arm. Agony sliced into her shoulder.
“Symphony!” Adhi shrieked, fear bubbling in her voice.
Tears stung her eyes and she bit down on her bottom lip. “You think you’re so big and bad, roughing up someone who’s smaller than you? Do you think your father would be proud? Do you think your mother, who died in the Red Death, would like this?”
“Shut your mouth!” He towered over her. “I do not have to wait to kill you. I can do it right now.” His eyes swerved to Adhi. “Or should I kill her first?”
Symphony trembled.
“What about,” he snarled, “I kill your mate?”
“No!” She squeezed her eyes shut and bowled over. A surge of blinding heat built in her stomach at his threat. Symphony opened her eyes and saw the light raining down from the sky.
It wasn’t touching her.
It was falling on Adhi.
The light consumed her friend, shooting blasts of energy that made it hard to see inside.
Adhi’s voice erupted in her head.“Symphony, I don’t know how I know this, but your nano-tech arm has to be activated.”
“It’s already activated. I can move it just fine.”
Grunts of confusion filled the air. The rebels were darting to and fro, holding their hands over their eyes. They looked dazed, almost as if the light had blinded them.
Adhi, encompassed by the light, hurried over to her until they were both standing inside it. “I just had a feeling.”
“A feeling?”
“Yeah. That I have something to do with all this. That I can unlock what needs to be unlocked.”
“Did you hear a voice?”
“No, it wasn’t a voice,” Adhi said. “It’s just… I don’t know how to explain it. Almost like an instinct.”
“Go ahead.”
Adhi nervously reached out and placed a small hand on Symphony’s shoulder.
She breathed in.
Then breathed out.
A slash of energy hit Symphony’s arm.
She gasped, lurching back.
Adhi gave her a concerned look.“Are you alright?”
“It burns.”
“I think that means it’s activated.”
“What do I do now?”
