None of my pack, however, are afraid of hard work.
“The music industry only allows Betas to become Idols,” I say. “In fact, it’s almost impossible for other designations to become singers or musicians. Those Betas are kept on ten year contracts that control them like servants. The billionaire Idol pack, who run the music empire, don’t give interviews and keep the location of their estate a mystery. Their NDAs with employees are crazy. I just knew that there was something dark underneath the music, money, and glamor.”
Piper tilts his head. “Is your secret mission to rescue the most famous Idol rock star in the world actually your chance to bond with him?”
I flush.
Instantly, I’m overwhelmed by the image of a Beta with thick lashed brown eyes and long white hair like frost.
I suck in a sharp breath.
Jin.
The Beta Idol who I’ve seen in my dreams for nearly ten years now, since his career began.
Ten years of being haunted by his sinful voice.
Ten years of feeling drawn to him in a way that I don’t understand in every interview and vlog.
Ten years of sensing that this man, who is so impossibly beautiful that it hurts to look at,is mine.
Yet also, knowing that millions of Omegas, Betas, and Alphas feel the same about this celebrity.
And to him, I’m a nobody.
“Bullshit,” I splutter, not meeting Piper’s eye. “This is a rescue mission. A star like that wouldn’t be interested in a Reject.”
Piper smirks, reaching beneath the counter to drag out a tray and start to fill it with disposable takeaway cups. “Hey, I call it as I smell it. Omega to Omega, your pheromones are going wild, sis.”
My flush deepens.
Shit, busted because of my own pheromones.
Piper’s smirk deepens.
He continues to fill the tray with the same energy as he raps his metallic nailed fingers on the counter to the music, as if he’s been drinking the coffee all day long and not serving it.
The funny thing is that I’ve drunk more coffee than my brother has. Piper only drinks a single cup for breakfast.
He’s naturally hyper.
He ducks underneath the counter, gathering up the remaining pastries and adding them to the tray.
Piper has done this every evening, since we opened Coffee Knot Tea, when he was sixteen.
In a couple of minutes, Chase will join us to walk Piper through Haven with his drinks and pastries.
It’s not safe for an unbonded Omega to be out alone at night.
Chase lives across the street with his own pack, the Ferals. He’s only newly bonded, which is something that I never thought I’d see.
I definitely didn’t think that Chase would be safe in a pack bond. But it happened on a mission to take down the most deadly mafia boss in a cage fighting ring.
It’s strange, but Chase is the happiest that I’ve seen him.
Of course, I’m keeping a close eye on the rest of the pack to make sure my brother truly is safe. Especially on Harley, the mafia boss’ daughter. I gave her the shovel talk.
So far, however, they’re as fiercely protective of my brother as I am.
