“Erik, this is Liam, who recently invested in the club and who is in charge of landscaping and all things plant for the new outdoor areas. “Liam, Erik, a charter member we haven’t seen lately.”
“Not responsible for the swing sets, huh?” I joked, shaking Liam’s hand.
“No, those are special order,” he said seriously. “I’m just one of the testers.”
I shook my head at the image of all these alphas swinging and sliding and playing on a jungle gym. “Can anyone sign up for that job?”
They didn’t let me play—that night, but I’d get a sneak peek and a promise that I could give everything a try in the near future. Until everything was completed, they didn’t want to chance someone besides themselves getting hurt.
Instead of heading for the floor, I joined Liam and Jabez and some other alphas in the conversation area. We had a great view of the stations, but we were far enough away to be able to speak without having trouble hearing each other. As soon as we sat down, a server came over and took orders from those of us who hadn’t already gotten drinks.
For the first time in ages, I felt comfortable and relaxed. After we talked about various things in the news and at the club, I asked about the omega I saw on his way out. “He seemed shy.”
The others looked at one another and shrugged. “He doesn’t sound familiar. We’re getting a lot bigger now,” Liam said.
“Sounds a lot like my company,” I replied. “But I think you’re doing better with it.”
Chapter Five
Heath
By the time I got back to the club, members were arriving. Grant had told me there were several back doors and pointed out the one employees should use when the club was open.
Immediately, I was hit with the waves of energy. I didn’t know if I would ever get used to the pulses of lust and passion this place thumped with. I peeked into the main room where people were already taking their places in the stations. The crack of a whip pierced my ears. There was danger and need brewing around every corner.
It was time to get to my booth.
And to work.
“There you are,” Grant said as I walked into the room. The booth where we controlled the lighting and music was soundproof, so once the door was closed, I let out a sigh of relief. I loved my job and was thankful the club hired me, but going from the quiet of the pack lands to here was overstimulating at times.
A lot of the time.
Our booth was behind a wall of glass. We could see the club down below and the DJ in front of us, but to any members, we were invisible. Just like I liked it.
“Am I late?” I asked.
“No. Not at all. But I wanted to teach you as much as possible before next week.”
Had I missed something?
“Next week?”
“Yeah. This is my last week. Didn’t anyone tell you?”
I shook my head. “They must’ve forgotten to tell me. Is someone taking over?”
Grant shook his head and patted the seat next to him. “Eventually, they will hire a new tech director, but they haven’t yet as far as I know. I wish I didn’t have to leave the club high and dry, but my omega is close to delivering our pups, and I’ve taken a remote job so I can work from home.”
“Oh, I understand. It’s great that you can stay home with your mate and pups.”
“I hope so.” Grant chuckled. “It will be a learning process, for sure. Anyway, let’s teach you everything you need to know or most of it anyway.”
We went to work and while Grant talked me through some things, I did most of the work on my own. All of this was new to me but I was a fast learner. Tell that to Ramsey. He’d always been so busy telling me how I was only meant to breed that he’d missed how smart I was. He’d also convinced me I was stupid in the process. An omega was meant for having babies and sweeping and wiping up after him.
That was to be my life with an alpha like Ramsey.
“Hear that?” Grant said, pushing the button that let us listen to the DJ and how his music changed. We could also hear if there was any upheaval so we could turn up all the bright lights.
