I roll my eyes and huff out a laugh. With a pat to his chest, I admonish him, “Maybe wait until all the foals are born.”
Huxley’s laughter fills the room, and I can’t help but smile at him. I love it when he laughs. There’s something so pure about it. Now, knowing him better, I can tell the difference between when he’s feeling genuine joy and when it’s performative.
August pushes his plate away and his gaze finds mine, sparkling with excitement. “Can we see the colt now? Hux told us we had to eat first,” he pouts slightly.
I nod eagerly because I’m just as excited to see him as the boys. Even though I want to rush out the door, I offer, “Let’s get the table cleaned up first.”
Macklin makes a sound to express his disappointment, but he doesn’t say anything or refuse. Instead, he stands up and takes his dirty plate into the kitchen. August is right on his heels.
“If we go slow enough, the boys will have everything cleaned up before we know it,” Huxley leans over and whispers against the shell of my ear.
Nothing he’s said is sexy, but the way his lips brush against my skin sends a shiver down my spine. When I look at him, his eyes are darker than normal and lust shines back at me.
Will it always be this way between us? I certainly hope so.
It wasn’t long ago when forgiving him for the past wasn’t even something I considered. It wasn’t that I was incapable, I just didn’t think he would care to earn it.
I underestimated him and didn’t see who he really was, and what he was hiding behind his smile, back then. Now my eyes are open.
Even better, my heart is full.
I can see a future with this man, and I desperately want to experience it. It won’t be perfect, there will be ups and downs, but that’s life.
And I can’t wait to live it.
CHAPTER 14
HUXLEY
In the weeks since Sierra birthed her colt, life has been good. The shadows of fear in Sunshine’s eyes are gone and she’s no longer holding back from me. I couldn’t be happier.
I find myself wanting to move faster because I know where this is going. Even as I try and enjoy the journey, it’s hard for me not to push for the next step because it’ll be even better than where we are now.
Falling asleep and waking up with her.
Hearing her laughter all the time.
Seeing her smile without making plans together.
Watching her grow and starting a family with her.
I want it all now, but I’ve been trying not to push her too fast or ask too much of her. It’s taken a lot of trust on her part for us to be where we are now, and I’m so damn proud of her for it.
Tonight, we’re enjoying dinner together at the Wintervale Resort. It’s fancier than The Range and more than a few steps up from Trudy’s Diner. Both of those places are great, and I know Sunshine would have been happy to go to either place for our date, but I wanted to show my woman even more. She deserves to dress up and go out somewhere I can really show her off.
The dress she’s wearing today almost had me pushing her back into her place and locking the door behind us. The green of her dress matches her eyes, and it hugs her curves perfectly. Keeping my hands off of her all night has been almost impossible.
As we share our dessert, she leans across the table with her eyes sparkling, “You’re doing it again.”
“Doing what?” My voice is husky and my cock throbs with the sinful as fuck look in my woman’s eyes.
“Looking at me like you want to devour me.”
I groan, “That’s because I do. If this weren’t such a nice place, I’d try and talk you into a quickie in the bathroom.”
Sunshine throws her head back and laughs, the sound washing over me and making my heart clench with joy. This.
This is the redemption I was looking for.
