I spend the next hour and the rest of the bottle of champagne explaining the evening, starting with Spencer arriving at the apartment to falling asleep in Callum’s comforting arms.
By the time I finish, I’ve heard comments such as “what an asshole” and “fuck him, he was such a douche,” however, now they are silent.
“So yeah, that’s my life in a nutshell.” I take a sip of my drink, waiting for someone to fill the silence.
“Well, he is obviously a dick”—yes, we’ve established that—“but have you ever thought that maybe he has a point?” Hadley dramatically crosses her arms and sits back in her seat.
“Hadley,” Lexi scolds.
She holds up her hands innocently. “Seriously, though—it’s not like we all haven’t said it before. I mean, yeah, Spencer didn’t have to break up with you for that reason, but maybe this is your chance.”
“Guys, we are not having this conversation again.” Everyone always asks why Callum and I aren’t together, that we have this undeniable spark, but don’t they get it? If it didn’t work out, I would lose everything. Callum Murphy is my everything. He was the one who got me through the stifling life of the social elite we were raised in. Cal’s the ear to listen, the arms to hold, and the one person I can always count on. He scared the boogeymen away and kept my fears at bay. A comforting touch that I couldn’t live without.
“You’re right. But can I ask a question?” Lexi asks, and I nod. “Then why do you look so sad? Isn’t this a good thing? If someone can’t accept Cal in your life, then you don’t need them.”
“No, I mean, I was sad last night, but now it doesn’t hurt as bad. I’m not sad because of that. I’m sad because I just realized I’m going to be the odd man out at the wedding.”
“Why not just go with Cal?” Hadley chimes in.
“No, he’s going with Zoe,” Lexi interjects before I can answer. I would bet good money that she has the entire guest list memorized and could tell us their dinner choice.
“So, then we find you a date.”Uh-oh.“Ooo, what about the new graphic designer at Maritime. I saw him the other day when Olivia and I brought Asher lunch.” There’s a new undeniable pep in Hadley’s voice, and Lexi cheers in agreement.Fucking traitor.
“No, please don’t set me up.” A blind date for a wedding, especially one a few hours away, is a terrible idea. What if it’s super awkward? Not like one can just drive right home.
“I mean, I don’t need anyone on my arm.” My mother would be ashamed of the words that just left my mouth.A handsome man must always accompany a woman on her arm.I inwardly cringe as I once again hear her voice in my head.
“Well, the option still stands, and I’m happy to introduce you.”
“I know, thanks.”
“You know…” Hadley gets a look in her eyes that makes me wonder if I should be worried as to what the following words out of her mouth are going to be. “If you’re single there, maybe you can find yourself another sexy single, and you guys can have slutty wedding sex together.” She leans forward, giving a little twerk against the chair. “I’m just saying. You do you, boo.” She winks, and we all end up giggling. Clearly, the champagne has hit her harder than Lexi or me. “Oh, and make sure you wrap it up.”
“Okay, missy, that’s enough champagne for you.”
