Chapter 23
Callum
SinceIstormedoutof the restaurant in the middle of lunch with my father, he has attempted to reach out to me more than he has in probably the last five years. He just won’t let it go. What part of “I don’t want anything to do with your plan” didn’t he get?
When my phone buzzes yet again, I lose my shit. I grab the phone without even looking to see who’s calling.
“What?” I shout.
“Umm, hey.”Oh fuck.I pull the phone back to see that Ben’s name is on the caller ID, not my father’s. I run my hand over my face, groaning.
“Hey, sorry about that.”
“Bad time? I can call later.”
“No, no. Just one of those days. What’s up?”
“I’ll just keep you a second. I just wanted to remind you to send Lexi the information for the auction. She is gathering all the details for the program and the MC. You’re the last one she needs.”
I can hear hushed voices on the other end, and I can see right through this phone call. I cover my mouth with my hand to keep them from hearing my laughter.
“I’m going to take a wild guess and say that Lexi is right next to you, right?”
He chuckles. “Uh-huh, yup, that sounds great.” His blatant lie yet perfect way to say that I was correct makes me laugh harder. This time, I don’t attempt to hide it.
“I’ll work on it tonight, and tell her to expect it in her email by first thing tomorrow morning.”
“I’ll hold you to that,” she shouts into the phone. “If it’s not there, I’m going to write something myself, and I promise you that youwill notlike it.”
I’d typically blow off her threats, but I one hundred percent believe that I wouldn’t like it. “Yeah, yeah, gotta go.”
“Cal—” she scolds. I hang up before she has a chance to threaten my manhood next.
I toss my phone on the coffee table and get back to work making revisions on this client’s landing page. Just a few more edits and their website will be complete.Talk about a pain in my ass.I follow their exact instructions, and they decide they want a different look. The only problem was, they forgot to tell me after all the work I had put in.
I shut my laptop and lean over, resting my hands on my elbows while rubbing my temples.
“You okay?” Brynn walks out of the kitchen with a cup of Easy Mac. She might make fun of me for my love of pudding, but she’s just as bad with mac and cheese. It’s impressive she has the body she has with her love of carbs.
I just shrug and lean back on the couch as Brynn approaches. She settles herself onto my lap, and I wrap my arms around her. She takes a forkful of mac and cheese, and my gaze never leaves the fork as she brings it to her lips. A soft moan slips from her lips, and my mind races. Thoughts of drama, auctions, and shitty clients are a thing of the past.
She then returns the fork to the cup and takes another forkful. This time, though, she feeds me.
“I need to ask you something.”
“Okay,” she skeptically says as she shoves another bite in her mouth.
“Tell me your perfect first date.”
Her brows furrow. “We said no dates.”
“You know we said a lot of things.” We’ve broken a few of the other rules; maybe this one is ready to be broken, too.
“Callum.”
I hold my hands up before she stabs me with the fork. “I know, I know.” I’m not giving up, though. We will just table this topic for another time. “This is for the bachelor auction. Ben called earlier, and I need to get this information to Lexi by the morning.”
“Oh.” She diverts her gaze away from me, and her body tenses. I guess we hadn’t discussed this since getting together.
