Hand frozen in midair, I blink at him.
He smirks. “My reaction was actually a lot like yours—complete shock.”
“Meg’s pregnant?”
“No.Blakeis pregnant.”
My heart drops. “Who?”
“Of course it’s Meg! Dude, I’m bullshitting you.” He claps my back.
“Thank God! You nearly lost me there.” Guffawing, I drape an arm over his shoulder. “Congrats, man. That’s fucking amazing.”
“Thanks.” He beams. “It’s unexpected, but I’ve never been happier.”
“Did you tell him?” Drew drops onto the bench beside me.
“He did,” I confirm, narrowing my eyes. “How long have you known?”
“Easy, tiger.” Drew’s laughter booms around the locker room, making the other guys turn our way. “If you hadn’t slid in just before practice started, you would’ve known this morning like I did.”
“Yeah, man.” Marco puts his elbows on his knees, studying me. “Did something happen?”
“I think I know.” Drew jumps to his feet, grinning. “Bella worked her magic, and our captain lost his head.”
Cringing, I dart a glance at Miller, who’s getting dressed on the other side of the room. He’s been quiet these days, even after the photos of Bella and me went viral. Could he actually be moving on?
“Belladidwork her magic.” I stand and pull my black hoodie out of my duffel. “But I’m not losing my head. I know what’s at stake, and I’m determined to do my best. I don’t want to hurt our chances of winning the Super Bowl.”
“Good. I’m gonna hold you to that.” Drew holds my gaze.
I focus on Marco, changing the subject to Meg and his big news. His features soften, and a goofy smile stretches across his lips. He’s obviously incredibly happy.
We make plans to meet for a drink tomorrow to celebrate his news, then head out.
CHAPTER 40
A WHORE
BELLA
October
“Kaden will be therein thirty minutes,” I tell Xander, holding my phone between my ear and my shoulder. He came home from practice, picked up Milo, and went to visit his parents.
“You’re taking him to Fenway, right?”
“Yeah. He’s never been.”
“I’ll join you later then, maybe with Milo.”
I smile. “Okay. Tell your mom and dad I say hi.”
“Already did. And, um, Mom wants us to come over for dinner. Whenever you’re ready.”
“I’d love to.” I pull my mascara out of my toiletry bag. “I better go. I need to finish getting ready.”
“Sure, babe. Love you.”
