I throw my arms around his neck, and he squeezes me tight. “For that wedding, no.”
“What?” My mom asks, just as my dad says. “Say that again?”
“Adam and I talked about getting married before our families.” This time, I don’t bother trying to smother the smile that spreads across my face. “I’m nearly positive there will be another wedding. One where you can walk me down the aisle and give me away.”
My mom bounces in her seat while my dad’s face is comical. I don’t know if he wants to celebrate or scream in frustration. Instead, he firmly says. “Tell that young man he can expect a phone call from me.”
I cover my mouth and giggle like a teenager. “Yes, Daddy.”
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Adam
Josh handled the newsof me being married to Susie better than I thought he would. It was so good that I’m a bit concerned.
Maybe he’s in shock? I know he’s troubled about everything surrounding Brie, especially since he hasn’t heard from her.
I know he hoped he would hear from her after the team set the media straight about what was being reported during the news conference. Not one person saw Josh kissing anyone. Even though pictures say a thousand words, these words are just not fact.
The plane just landed, and if the look on his face tells me anything, it’s that Brie hasn’t left a message.
My phone vibrates, and a crooked grin lines my lips when I see some messages from Susie.
Susie:Hey, handsome.
Susie:You were amazing out there today!
Susie:It’s official; my family knows we’re married.
Susie:And that we’re most likely getting married again.
I laugh out loud, and my grin widens, only to have it immediately fall when I read the following message.
Susie:My dad said to expect a call from him.
My stomach churns.
“Hey, are you alright?” Josh asks. “You like you’re going to be sick.”
I hand him my phone so he can read Susie’s messages.
“Look.” He shoves it back at me. “I know you’re married, but I don’t need to read her sappy love messages to you.”
I roll my eyes and push the phone back at him. “The last message. Just read the last message.”
A slow grin, the first I’ve seen since yesterday, crawls across Josh’s face. “Oh yeah. My dad is probably going to murder you for not letting him walk his baby down the aisle.”
“What?” Josh laughs at my expression. “Wait, no. We’re planning on having a wedding for our families. At least, I think that’s the plan. I need to talk to her to iron out a few details.”
“I’m gonna say by those lovey-dovey messages she sent you, there aren’t many details to iron out.” Josh looks like he just ate something sour. “And if that’s the case, maybe my dad won’t kill you. Can’t guarantee anything, though.”
When he hands back my phone, I’m pretty confident that his shoulders are shaking slightly.
Is he laughing at me? Yup. He’s laughing at me.
“I guess if someone married my daughter and didn’t ask me for permission, I might want to kill them too.” I shrug, my shoulders sagging.
“When you put it like that, you’re probably right.” I look over at him to see himopenlylaughing at me. “Look, Adam, if I know my sister, it was her idea to keep the marriage quiet. As long as you love her and are good to her. My father will love you and, at some point, forgive you.”
