“Is that good?” She tried to sound teasing, but to her ears, her question sounded more like insecurity.

“Hell, yeah. You’re perfect. Come here.”

His drawl made her stomach dip. She eased down as his head came up. His mouth latched onto her nipple. As he suckled the nub, she writhed against him, her core applying pressure to his groin. The friction heightened the ecstasy, but she needed more. Luke’s free hand kneaded her other breast, his ministrations turning her bones to mush. Her ears started ringing, the sound not entirely unpleasant.

Wait. She blinked, pushing through the desire to realize her earsweren’t ringing. Her cell phone was. And the ring was distinctive enough for her to know who called. She’d forgotten to tell Lyric she made a date with Luke tonight, so she figured her sister would forgive her if she didn’t answer her call this one time.

The ringing stopped only to start again.

“Luke. Luke, I need to stop.”

She used every ounce of her willpower to pull away, and to his credit, he didn’t try to pull her back, though she was sure if they had gone much farther, stopping wouldn’t have been an option for either of them.

“I’m sorry,” Luke began. “I shouldn’t have…”

Melody stood on shaky legs and slipped her arms back into the straps of her dress. “No, it’s the phone. My sister. I have to get it.”

She didn’t bother with the zipper, instead rushing over to the table to retrieve her phone. She hoped Lyric would attribute her breathlessness to her rushing to answer. Now wasn’t the time to explain how close she came to sex with Luke.

“Lyric. Hey. What’s up?”

“Oh, my God, Melon. They’re trying to get to me!”

Lyric’s voice was frantic, her words slurred as she sobbed into the phone. Melody could almost feel her sister’s fear, and her heart slammed against her chest.

“Lyric, what do you mean? Who’s after you? Are you hurt? What’s going on?”

“They said they want to rape me and then k-kill me. Melon, what do I do?”

Melody’s body turned cold as her sister’s words registered. She turned fearful eyes to where Luke sat on the couch, not hiding the fact he was listening to every word.

“My sister’s in trouble.”

Chapter Seventeen

Luke could hear the panicked voice coming over the phone even though Melody held it to her ear. He couldn’t understand the words, but it was enough to alert him something was wrong. If his senses hadn’t been zeroed in so acutely on Melody and how she tasted and felt in his arms, he would have been quicker in reacting. But when Melody faced him with terror on her face, he sprang into action. He was at her side, slipping the phone from her hand and placing the call on speaker before she could question him.

“Lyric, my name is Luke. I’m a friend of your sister’s. Can you tell me what’s happening?”

“They’re at the door. They’ve been pounding on it like they’re going to bust it down. Th-they told me what th-they wanted to do t-t-to me.”

Melody’s hands flew to cover her mouth as tears pooled in her eyes. He placed a reassuring hand on her arm as he took charge of the situation.

“Lyric, I need you to put us on hold and call 9-1-1.”

Lyric sniffed. “I did. They said they would send someone, but the call dropped. I-I think they may be tool-late.”

“Nope. We’re not going to think like that, okay? They’re going to get someone there. Now tell me, where are you?”

“My a-apartment. They were out…they were outside earlier. Now they’re…”

Her voice trailed off, and Luke could hear the pounding faintly in the background of the call.

His mind spun with what he could do to help her. Melody told him her sister was in school in Shreveport, and he cursed the fact he had no contacts in the area. “Where are you in your apartment?”

“Closet.”

“Okay. I need you to listen to me very carefully. Do exactly as I say. I need you to get out of the closet. You need to hide somewhere where you’ll have more room to react, and you’ll have access to more things to use as a weapon. Like a bathroom with a lock on the door.”
