Brooks greeted McDaniels with a nod, and I’m prepared to do even less. I’m here to support Brooks. He’s out there chasing his dreams today. Nothing else matters.

My body relaxes into its seat, and I follow number nineteen as he weaves through opposing Rebels players. He sprints downfield with his eyes on the ball spiraling in the air high above him, and makes the catch.

He’s phenomenal.Phenomenal.And he has this in the bag.

“I’m sure he’s told you everything.”

I find Naomi’s gaze is fixed on me. Somehow, I manage to stop my sigh before it escapes. “Yes, I do know what happened.”

There. Nice and mature. I am zen.

Gandhi levels of tranquility.

“I’m sure he’s told you terrible things about me.”

Zen. Gandhi.

Peace and tranquility.

“All the ways I ruined our relationship.”

Oh, fuck this. I’ve never been zen in my life.

“Has that ever worked for you?”

The sad puppy dog eyes she’d been feeding me spark with something like triumph. “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“That bad, sad sack act. It’s an interesting choice, considering everyone here seems to know your claim to shame.”

Her lips part.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Is that not what you wanted to talk about? All your lying, cheating, letting go of the best dick I’ve ever had?” She scoffs and tucks her hair behind her ear. I shoot Monica a smile. “I haven’t walked straight since I met him, but I guess we all want different things out of life.”

Monica presses her lips together, fighting a laugh.

“That’s not—”

I flick a hand in Naomi’s direction, stopping her before she can get going. “Changed my mind. Let’s not talk at all. I’d rather watch my man make a fool out of yours.”

I settle back in my seat to see Brooks looking up from the benches.I’m sure he’s just witnessed me interact with his ex, and the sly looks being exchanged by the women sitting between me and Naomi.

“Not bad,” Monica mutters in my ear. “And I was dead serious about us wanting Brooks to get the contract. We adore him.”

“So do I.”

Brooks raises his brows at me. It’s his big day, he’s the one competing against his ex’s affair partner. But as always, he’s checking in with me. Putting me first, making sure I’m okay.

To say that I adore him doesn’t even scratch the surface.

“Nice ass,” I mouth silently.

Brooks shakes his head, trying and failing to kill a smile.

Chapter44Brooks

Siena’s dress swishes around her thighs as she says something to Cam Guerdy, the Rebels quarterback and one of my closest friends back when I played here.

I hadn’t kept in contact with any of these guys after I moved to Oakwood, though they’d tried to keep in touch. It was too painful a reminder that, while I was out there coaching college ball and hating every minute of it, they were back here. Still living my dream.
