If it did, she and her baby and everyone else there could be home by the end of the day.

If it didn't, she’d likely just signed her baby’s death warrant.

CHAPTER 21

April 27th

2:14 P.M.

This had to work.

If it didn't, they didn't have anything else.

Nor did they know when they might.

Tobias wasn't sure he could sit in the Cyber Team room at Prey, staring at his screen, tapping away at his keyboard, scouring hours’ worth of security footage trying to match up names and vehicles, and praying for a lead on the men who had abducted Isabella, without losing his mind in the process.

He needed to be doing something more active. Something that felt like it was making progress in bringing his girl home.

When they’d gotten a call about two hours ago to say that a woman had stumbled onto a road in Canada near the US border and flagged down a driver, insisting that he find her cops and call Prey Security, he’d known in his gut that Isabella had something to do with it. He hadn't even needed Raven to tell him that the woman was claiming she’d been abducted by an organ trafficking ring and that a nurse had helped her escape.

All he needed to know was his little firecracker was a superhero. All four feet eleven inches of her. With her wild blonde curls, huge baby blues, and the softest pair of lips he’d ever had the pleasure of kissing, her superpower was her ability to be her firecracker self no matter what situation she was thrown into.

Honestly, he was in total awe of her.

She’d been the one who was knocked unconscious and dragged back to the hell she’d already survived once before, and yet she was the one making the progress they needed on the case. He was the one left behind, and yet he’d been all but useless these last twenty-four hours.

Now he was heading to a local hospital where the woman who had flagged down the car was being treated. It had been a long time since he’d been to Canada, and while he usually appreciated the gorgeous landscape and friendly people, today he only cared about getting to one person in particular.

Even though the woman had already given her statement, given the nature of the case and the scope of the trafficking ring, Prey would be working with the local police, and Rocco and his team had met him at the airport.

No one spoke as the vehicle wound its way through the streets, and when it pulled up outside the hospital, Tobias had to stop himself from flinging himself out the door and running through the halls to the woman’s room. The only thing that stopped him was reminding himself of the ordeal she’d just gone through and that seven huge men marching into her room might be too overwhelming. The last thing he wanted was for her to shut down.

The others followed him as they made their way to the room they’d been directed to, and as soon as he stepped through the door and a pair of hazel eyes shifted to track his movements, he knew he needn’t have worried. While the woman was pale, with red marks around her wrists, her gaze was clear and filled with determination. No wonder Isabella had known this was someone she could work with.

“You're the father,” she said as he crossed the small room to stand beside the bed.

“How do you know that?”

“Only one without a wedding ring. Plus … I don’t know. For some reason, you kind of match her,” Trinity Malloy informed him.

“Match her?”

Trinity nodded. “I can see the two of you as a couple.” When her gaze roamed the room that now seemed too full with six SEALs and one former Delta Force operator crammed into it, in addition to the woman in the bed, he also glanced at the guys.

“Do you want them to wait outside?” While Trinity seemed to be holding it together as best as she could—better, actually, than anyone could have hoped for—he hadn't missed the red rims around her eyes. Just because she was keeping her emotions in check didn't mean she wasn't traumatized.

“Nah, they can stay. I’ve already told the cops what I know, though, so I don’t know what else to tell you.” As she spoke, Trinity began to fidget with the edge of the blanket that was tucked over her legs.

Pulling up the only seat in the room, he sat and focused his attention on Trinity. “Everything you can tell us makes a difference. The cops sent us your statement, but we still would like to hear it from you if you're up to it. We’ll try not to interrupt, but we might have specific questions, or we might need you to elaborate on something.”

“You're going in to rescue them, aren't you?” Trinity asked, her gaze bouncing from one of them to the next to the next.

“Absolutely,” Rocco assured her.

“Soon as we finish up here with you, we’re going to go and find the location where they were holding you,” Ace added.

“You should go now. They’re going to know,” Trinity whispered.
