“Sure.” Destiny smiled at Putnam. “I’ll try and catch you before you leave town so we can talk about a future story.”
“I’m not leaving town until I havethisstory,” Putnam called out.
Mercy led Destiny through the house and into a large kitchen where Mrs. Weller was pouring three cups of coffee.
“Well, there you are,” she said with an easy grin. “Have a seat and chat a spell.”
Both women shared an unspoken look as Destiny sat. Mrs. Weller patted Destiny’s hand as she placed a cup of coffee in front of her.
She took a sip as Mercy sat across from her. “You’ve had a productive visit. You found your friend and his plus one. You’ve pointed the way to several sets of remains, and you’ve managed to win Walker’s heart. Did I forget anything?” The tone of Mercy’s voice was anything but friendly. Mercy glanced at her mother-in-law.
Mrs. Weller’s expression was mostly blank, except for a glint of humor in her eyes. “Nope, I think you covered most everything.”
“Most?” Destiny asked.
“Yeah, well, I do have one question,” Mercy said.
Destiny raised her brow in anticipation. Only one question. That she could handle.
“What was the real reason you wanted Walker Bennett to guide you up the mountain?”
“I was worried about my friend. I didn’t lie about that,” Destiny answered.
“Funny,” Mercy said, taking the envelope that Mrs. Weller handed her. She opened the flap and tossed the pictures out onto the table. “You mind explaining these?”
