Porter winked, and my eyes widened. He turned the gun on Thaddeus, and stepped in front of me, protecting me from the maniac.

“You should have used the devil’s breath instead of thinking you could make me kill her just from your hypnosis.” Porter yanked the whistle free and tossed it to the sand, away from Thaddeus before pulling the earplugs out of his ears. He tossed them at the delusional wannabe cult leader.

Thaddeus grinned. “Kill him.”

His mother raised her gun at Porter. Her finger was on the trigger as I shoved Porter out of the way. His mom didn’t even blink as the bullet pierced my chest. I fell to the ground just as Porter yanked the gun free from his mother’s hand and knocked her unconscious. He aimed the gun at Thaddeus and pulled the trigger. The bullet pierced his head.

My eyes fluttered just as helicopters were landing in the sandy field. The sound of my brothers’ voices calling my name had me shielding my eyes and looking across the distance. I swallowed as Porter yanked off his shirt and held it to the wound on my chest.

“Looks like you get to meetmyfamily now.”

My eyes rolled back, and my world tumbled into darkness.
