“Thanks,” he said, lifting his chin a bit higher. “The tattoos on Katerina’s arm, and one of the other Jane Doe’s, is the only other link to the island besides the other girl that washed ashore.”

“And they’re sending you, why? Aren’t you too close to the investigation?”

“I was invited onto the island. As you can imagine, trying to do surveillance on a private island isn’t without its challenges.” Porter clicked off the screen.

Even though he was invited, something told me that his superiors might question his impartiality due to his relationship with the suspects.

“What are you hoping to gain by going as a guest? You must know they’ll be on their best behavior, knowing you’re an FBI agent,” I said.

“I’m visiting as a son bringing home his fiancée to meet the folks.”

“Now wait a minute. I agreed to go with you, not play house.”

“Your reputation is safe with me. My… what does my sister call it? Womanly woo-woo doesn’t work when I’m with you.”
