Sure, tonight was hard for her, but there’s no reason for her to act out like this.

With a deep breath, I try to calm my rage before I make my way over to her. Mila has her back to me, so she doesn’t see me coming, but the asshole who’s trying to get in her fucking pants does. His eyes widen, and he swallows hard—no doubt at the look on my face—when I step up behindmysunshine.

My mouth drops to her ear, and I keep my eyes on the man who clearly has a death wish, my voice dropping low when I speak. “Having fun?”

Mila startles at the sound of my voice, and her head whips around, as she glares at me over her shoulder. She was clearly not expecting me, which pisses me off more.

“What are you doing here, Colter?” she hisses for only me to hear.

Gripping her by the waist, I pull her against me, making her gasp when she feels my hard cock pressing into her. I press a kiss to her ear, my gaze fixed on the asshole as I drawl, loud enough for him to hear. “Coming to getmywoman.”

She huffs, trying to pull out of my hold, but I just grip her tighter. Out the corner of my eye I see Nova watching us, a smirk tugging at her lips. She’s loving every minute of this.

“Hmm, interesting,” Nova murmurs, her voice sly as her gaze flicks between me, Mila and the dead man. I want to ask her what she means, but I’m not about to waste my time on that. Instead, I focus on the asshole standing in front of me, who was eyeing my woman as if she was his next meal.

I can feel my anger rising as I lock eyes with him, but he’s about to learn real quick who Mila belongs to.

I lean in close to Mila, letting my tongue drag up her neck, slow and deliberate. She gasps softly, her body stiffening again but I don’t let go. I tighten my hold on her, letting her and everyone else in this place know that she belongs to me.

“You can leave,” I tell the asshole with a death wish in front of me, my voice low and dangerous. My tone leaves no doubt in his mind that I’m not asking. “Hermanis here to take care of her now.”

The guy hesitates for a second, staring between us. “It was nice to meet you both. Enjoy your night,” he mutters before making the right decision and walking away. I feel the tension drain out of my body as soon as he leaves.

I press another kiss to her neck, ignoring Nova’s stare as I grab Mila’s hand and twist her in my hold. My eyes lock with her narrowed ones, and I can’t help the smirk that curves my lips.

I cup her face, rubbing my nose against hers as I whisper. “Let’s go, birthday girl.”

Chapter Forty-Five

MILA

“You can leave. Her man is here to take care of her now.” Colter almost growls, his tongue trailing a hot path up my neck, making me shiver with both pleasure and frustration.

How dare he act like a damn caveman, especially when just a couple of hours ago I had to watch women, including his ex, practically throwing themselves at him.

Adrian and Jonathon, two guys that approached us not long after we arrived, exchange a look, a silent understanding passing between them before Adrian looks back to me. “It was nice to meet you both. Enjoy your evening.”

His words are polite but hurried and I can see the fear in his eyes before he walks away. Jonathon makes his farewells and follows. It’s not like I was interested in Adrian. Sure, he’s attractive in the clean-cut all-American kind of way, but I prefer my men more rugged. The two of them were out of towners, just here for a weekend of fun, and the asshole behind me just scared them off.

Colter turns me in his arms, a smirk on his handsome face as he rubs his nose against mine. “Let’s go, birthday girl.”

I pull back, levelling him with a glare. He meets my eyes with a challenging stare of his own. He’s so hot, I almost forget thatI’m angry, but I shove the distraction aside, and snap, “What the hell was that all about?”

Irritation flickers in his narrowed green eyes. “Funny. I was about to ask you the same thing. What’s your game, Mila?”

Red hot anger heats my veins, but before I can unleash it, Nova grabs my elbow. “Not here. You’re drawing attention,” she mumbles, her gaze shifting around the bar.

I tense, scanning the room. Nova’s right. Several people watch us, like we’re a spectacle at a zoo, waiting to see what happens next. The only thing that calms me slightly, is the realization that I don’t really know anyone here. But if they know who I am, or who my father is... I shudder at the thought. I can already hear the rumors spreading, and the idea of my father hearing them makes me break out in a cold sweat.

I suck in a calming breath, force a fake smile, and make my way toward the exit. I know Nova and Colter are following closely behind, but for now I don’t acknowledge either of them. As I push the heavy timber door open, the crisp night air hits my clammy skin, making me shiver. Before I can say a word, a jacket is draped over my shoulders. I don’t need to look to see whose it is.

Coming to a stop by Nova’s jeep, I spin around to face Colter. Nova stands next to me, casually leaning against her car, fully prepared for the showdown. If I wanted privacy, she’d step away, but honestly, Nova has been with me all night, watching the mess at the rodeo unfold right alongside me. I plant my hands on my hips, locking eyes with Colter. His jaw tightens, but he doesn’t back down. In fact, he looks like he’s about to burst a blood vessel with how angry he is.

“Well?” he presses, his voice laced with frustration.

“Well what?” I seethe, barely containing my own fury.

He huffs a laugh, but it’s devoid of any humor. “What the hell was that in there? You were all over that guy.”
