He said we’re friends.

Can I interest you in being friends with time-limited benefits, Mr Hariri?

“No issue. If it’s providing me with accommodation,” he said. “I’d like to stay. And I’d love to share a picnic. But I know somewhere closer. We can walk.”

“Sounds good. My sister gave me some leftovers.”

“Salady things?”

“My family knows I’m addicted to salady things. Although she tucked some roast chicken in as well.” Enough for two meals, her sister had said. Or had her sister meant two people? “What did you eat tonight?”

“I defrosted Maha’s leftover lasagne.”

“We’re letting our families feed us.” She wouldn’t feel guilty about it.

He shrugged. “It’s part of how our families work.”

She’d always put her family first. Would she ever come first for someone?

Bea had told him more than she’d planned tonight. Touched him, in response to his hug. Lying alone in bed, she relieved the moment. Hardly a passionate cuddle, but she’d trembled inside, and she’d invited him to stay.

Despite knowing she couldn’t keep him, she was toying with more than rebellion.

CHAPTER SIX

Cas shouldered thebackpack with their food and some cold water.

“I won’t say no if you touch me.”

I’m insane.

Cuddling on a couch with Beatriz didn’t feel insane, tracing the length of her cheek, the outline of her earlobe. It felt natural, good, the first step toward something more.

Get a grip.

At least he’d had the sense to withdraw. He groaned as a different image entered his head.
