“I’ll try not to.” I set my cup down on the coffee table. “I don’t always have the best luck. That’s something you should know about me.”
He tears open the sealed envelope. “I have great luck. You can borrow some of mine, Connor.”
I laugh. “That would be nice.”
He slips on reading glasses from his pocket and scans the report. “Now, let’s see what’s going on with you.”
“Okay.”
He scans the report. “You actually are slightly anemic, which I’m not surprised by. That’s probably why you fainted. Your glucose levels are good. Your liver and kidney functions are normal.” His expression isn’t anything worrisome until he gets down to the end. He wrinkles his brow, looking confused.
“Is something wrong?” I ask hesitantly.
“Uh…” He blinks at the results and rereads them again, starting from the top. “I wasn’t expecting this,” he murmurs, appearing puzzled.
“Oh, God,” I whimper. “Is it really bad news? Am I dying?”
He glances at me over the top of the paper, looking preoccupied. “No. You’re not dying.”
“But something is wrong?” My stomach churns.
“Well… I… uh…”
“What is it?” I grit my teeth, waiting for the horrible news I know must be coming. “Tell me, Sully. Just be blunt.”
He shakes his head. “I’m not quite sure how to put this.” He pulls off his glasses. “Sully, why did you think you couldn’t get pregnant?”
Confused by his question, I mumble, “Because I had several doctors tell me that. I was spotting in my teens, and they ran tests. They all said the same thing: that I have a rare, genetic condition that prevents pregnancy.”
“Hmmm.” He rubs his chin, looking mystified.
“Why are you asking me that?” My heart races as I wait for his response.
“Well, because?” His face is flushed and he sounds breathless. “According to this blood test, you’re pregnant, Connor.”
I stare at him in stunned silence. I’m positive he isn’t joking. Sully would never joke about something like that. But it’s also impossible to believe I heard him correctly. “I’m sorry,” I whisper, “What did you say?”
He shakes his head, appearing flustered. “The blood test results say that you’re with child.”
“That’s not possible.” I feel like I’m in a dream. “They must have gotten the tests mixed up. I… I can’t conceive, Sully. Not even counting what the doctors told me, I’ve had unprotected sex before, and I… I never got pregnant. This has to be a mistake.”
He grimaces. “I’ll have them run the test again. But I will say, the lab at the hospital is very reliable. As far as I know, the lab has never mixed up anyone’s tests before.”
“There’s a first time for everything.” I rub the back of my neck, trying not to overreact. “It has to be a mistake.”
“What if it isn’t?” he asks quietly. “You’ve been feeling run down. You’ve been nauseous, and you fainted. What if you really are pregnant, Connor?”
“But… how could two specialists be wrong? They’re the experts, right?” I touch my stomach, confused. “I’m… I’m defective. If I could get pregnant, I’d have been pregnant long ago.”
Sully’s expression gentles. “I’ll have them rerun the test.”
“Thank you.” I’m not sure how to feel. While I’ve yearned my entire life to be able to have babies, if I am pregnant, that means it’s Paolo’s child. That would be a disaster. I can’t have Paolo’s baby. That’s just not possible. Valentino Syracuse would probably have me murdered rather than let a lowly omega like me bear Paolo’s offspring.
“I do think you need to prepare yourself though. It’s possible the second test will give us the same results.” He sounds so much calmer than I feel.
I shake my head. “But why would the specialists have told me I couldn’t conceive?”
“Doctors make mistakes sometimes. Even good doctors. It’s possible the specialists you saw were wrong.”
