“Okay.” He lets out a shaky breath. “You’re probably right.”

“I am right.” I reach out and touch his cheek. I’m glad when he doesn’t move away. “Come to my room tonight.”

His eyes flicker with uneasiness. “I don’t think I should. It’s too risky. This was already a mistake.”

I frown. “Why? We’re adults, Connor. We can have sex if we want. It has nothing to do with your job.”

“Dario wouldn’t see it that way. If I get caught sleeping with you, Dariowill fire me. You know that.”

I frown. “Well then, I’ll just rehire you.”

He laughs gruffly. “As what? I’m a manny, not a concubine.”

“Listen, you’re not going anywhere.” I move closer to him, enjoying the way his breathing picks up speed. “No one is going to know what we’re up to butus. We’ll be really careful.” I slip one arm around him and he leans into me. That excites the hell out of me. Knowing he’s accepting my comfort turns my insides to goo. He still wants me, but he’s nervous. He just needs a little coaxing to sleep with me again. “Please, come to my room tonight. I need more of you, Connor.”

“I shouldn’t.”

“Yes. Youshould.”

His eyes fixate on my mouth. “Shit, you’re not making it easy to do the right thing.”

“I’m not trying to make it easy. I’m trying to seduce you.” I smirk, running my hands up his back. “Please, Connor. Don’t disappoint me.”

“God. Why can’t I just say no? What iswrongwith me?” He shivers and presses his face into the crook of my neck. He inhales my scent, which is a good sign. He puts his hands on my hips as he kisses a trail up my throat to my mouth. He presses an open mouthed kiss on mine, and we both groan and deepen the kiss. His quivering lips are greedy, and once the kiss ends,he whispers, “Okay. I’ll come to your room tonight after I put Baby Joesph to bed.”

I squash my groan of relief. I don’t want him to know I was really scared he’d turn me down. I don’t want him to know how much power he has over me. “Perfect.”

“I just don’t want to get in trouble.”

“You won’t.” I ruffle his hair because he looks like a scared little boy. “Let me make sure the coast is clear.” I open the door to peek out and almost have a stroke when I see Dario striding down the hall, straight for my room.

What the hell?

Panic washes through me and I step back inside the room, leaving the door slightly ajar. I grab hold of Connor’s shoulders and mouth the word,“Hide.”

Connor looks momentarily confused, but then he widens his eyes and lunges toward the bed. He sprints around the mattress, ducking down behind the big bed. I turn back to the half open doorway just as Dario arrives.

“Oh, hey there, Dario.” I sound wooden and my body language is stiff. Sweat breaks out on my upper lip and my heart is racing.

He’s looking down at his phone, but when he glances up, he frowns. “What’s wrong with you?”

“N… nothing. Why would anything be wrong?” I wince inwardly when my voice wobbles.

He narrows his eyes. “You’re acting strange.”

I guess Connor was right. He really is astute at reading people. I shrug trying my best to calm the hell down. “Well, I… I almostdiedtoday. Is it really that odd that I’m feeling rattled?”

“I guess not.” He purses his lips, studying me.

I clear my throat. “Did you come to my room for a reason?”

“Uh, yeah. I texted you, but you didn’t respond.”

“Did you?” My knees are almost knocking as he studies me. “I must have been in the shower. What did you want?”

“You seemed miffed earlier.”

I frown. “I did?”
