Then, when Kyle returned on Saturday after the run, he would be gone.
Baby and the Alpha
Chapter Six
He was doing the right thing, Kyle thought after watching Amanda, Marnie and Cyrus plan the pack run. He’d been treating Cyrus like an alpha-mate, and tonight he had every intention of making him one officially. Okay, so he had to ask Cyrus first. He couldn’t just spring it on him, but he was sick of them tiptoeing around each other, even if they’d both been so busy the last few days it had been ridiculous. Cyrus had even missed eating supper with them the past two nights because after getting Kyle to sign something, they’d finally gotten online banking, so his mate had been knee-deep in bank statements.
His mate.Kyle smiled. It had a nice ring to it.
On top of everything else, they were getting an extra five wolves from a pack that had been taken over. Martin had spoken to the Shifter Rescue people and Kyle had been busy helping Liam get the cabins together, leaving Pepper and Josh to the everyday hassles. Five wolves weren’t a lot, but it was great if they were getting a reputation as a good pack to welcome them.It meant five would soon become more. They had the land and they needed more wolves to be secure. The cabins were all being repaired and a few nearly ready. But tomorrow was the pack run and he absolutely had to talk to Cyrus before everyone arrived.
Kyle glanced down at Aiva who was sitting on his knee playing with the buttons on his shirt and clutching her teddy. Chloe had all her toys lined up on the rug because she was having her own pack meeting.
“That looks exhausting,” Liam commented as he walked in, tipping his head to the three co-conspirators and the mountains of food that were being prepared. Kyle chuckled weakly. He’d been listening to them for ten minutes waiting to corral Cyrus and it had felt exhausting.
“I have interesting news,” Liam said casually. Kyle quirked an eyebrow. “You’re never going to believe who I just took a call from.” He waved Kyle’s phone that he’d left in the office about an hour ago. Kyle huffed, but took it good naturedly. He’d had no intention of letting a call interrupt the conversation with Cyrus.
“Well, are you going to tell me or am I going to have to set Aiva on you to get the info?” Liam beamed at the little girl and swiped her off Kyle’s knee. She shrieked and tried to bat him with her teddy bear. Liam tickled her unrepentantly until her shrieking turned to giggles. Kyle watched in interest as Liam tried hard not to look at Amanda to see if she’d noticed him coming into the kitchen and Amanda tried hard to seem as if she hadn’t. He grinned. They would make a cute couple. Then he rolled his eyes because he sounded like his grandma.
“I just spoke to the alpha from Fairfield. He apologized for his wolves and wondered if you’d like to meet up? He said and I quote. ‘It seems idiotic not to be friends with the neighbors.’”
“And do you think its genuine?”
Liam nodded. “Yep, and you know why?”
Kyle played along. “Nope, but I’m sure you’re gonna tell me.”
“His youngest is a male omega. He’d heard good things about this pack and the fact you treat them the same as other wolves.” Liam mock-punched him.
“I have a better idea,” Kyle said with a smile. “Why don’t you invite him and his family to the pack run tomorrow?”
Liam’s eyebrows nearly disappeared but he waved the teddy bear at him. “Sneaky.”
Kyle shrugged. “You convinced me.”
“Oh, second thing. The guys are wanting to finish repairs on the cabins. Did you decide if you’re going to put two together for Eric’s family?” Kyle smiled. Shauna had three pups already and they’d just found out she was expecting twins.
Kyle rubbed his chest absently wondering why it ached. He’d felt weird for the last couple of days and wondered if it was because his wolf wanted out. His normally agreeable animal had been acting very unagreeable all week. Maybe the animal was bored? His men had never worked out why he seemed to have an instinct for IEDs. They would certainly never have guessed his wolf could smell them. They were just glad each time he called one in to be detonated before someone stepped on it and lost their life.
“Let’s shift and run there,” Kyle said. They had just enough time before the new family arrived.
Liam agreed, but added, “Let me go make that call first?”
They returned Aiva back to Amanda and Liam got a wide smile. Kyle automatically looked at Cyrus, but Cyrus was busy with the lists and didn’t even so much as look up. His wolf whined in his head.
“Cyrus, can I see you for a moment?”
Cyrus looked up then, panic shining in his eyes, and Kyle smiled trying to be gentle. His gorgeous mate still expected the worst; that would take time to fix and Kyle had plenty of it.
Marnie shooed them both out of the door and Kyle walked them a few yards away from the house. “I know this week has been incredibly difficult on you and you’ve been amazing helping in the office, with the girls. You’re Marnie’s favorite person.” He laughed nervously but swore to himself. That sounded like he wasn’t Kyle’s favorite person. “I just needed—”
“Kyle!” They both looked over as Liam ran out from the kitchen. “Boss, I’m sorry but we have a problem.”
Kyle tamped down his irritation. “What?”
“It’s the pack members we’re getting. Someone got the wrong message or something because it’s not five of them. It’sfifty. And they’re on their way.”
“Fuck,” Kyle swore and glanced helplessly at Cyrus. They’d only gotten five cabins ready. “Go,” Cyrus said. “I’ll get more bedding and supplies. If you send me some gammas, we can get them ready.”
