I turned to glance out the window, ducking quickly at the flash of light, and then covered my head as the back window was hit with gunfire.

“Bulletproof car, Siren.”

“Trevor, it’s meant to withstand a couple bullets, not a valley of them.” With that, more shots were fired and after a few rounds, the window finally shattered, glass raining down.

“Fuck! Keep your head down, Lucia.”

I nodded, feeling Trevor shift next to me, and then I heard the cocking of his gun, and the rapid fire with which he shot back.

“I can’t make out who that is, Boss.” Once more, Jameson did a quick move, flinging me onto the floor. “Sorry, Lucia.”

“Don’t worry about me. Don’t forget, mafia princess, I know all about these things.” I carefully shifted, holding onto the seat so I could climb up and onto it, trying to see if I could catch a peek.

“Damn it, Lucia, stay down!” Trevor roared, letting off another round.

“Don’t worry about me! This is part of my world too, you know.” I lifted my head a little bit, focusing on the passenger as much as I could. I opened my eyes wide, about to say something, when another round of bullets entered the car, and a guttural cry erupted from the man next to me. I turned to look at him, seeing him clutch his shoulder, but the blood was already seeping out.

“Hurry, Jameson. And call the doc, he was hit.” I took Trevor’s gun, giving him a quick kiss, then kneeled on the seat, getting enough of an aim to blow out the tire, allowing Jameson to peel away.

Four minutes later, we pulled up to the house, and I helped Trevor out, smiling at his grumbling.

“I was supposed to carry you in.”

“Yeah, well, Husband, it seems the news of our nuptials spread, and someone wanted to fight it.” I nodded at my dad as I helped Trevor into the living room, glad Doc was already there.

“Who did this?” my dad questioned once we were in, and I crossed my arms.

“I know who.” All eyes turned to me. “Chung Lee, the mighty developer out of New York. Guess he runs more than just some business plans.”

~ Chapter Ten ~

Trevor

“How would you know that, Lucia?” I watched as Lucia prickled at her dad’s tone. I had to remember that with the Italians, women were seen but not heard. Not many stepped into the role of spy, or lookout, or even put themselves in danger, like this woman had.

Oh, they knew how to take care of themselves, no doubt about that. And they certainly heard about far more shit than what was good for them. But that didn’t mean they spoke up about it.

“Mr. Russo,” I started, waving at my bleeding arm. “Can you let me get stitched up here, then we can come back to discussing this. I think we need to have a talk about what we’re going to do anyway. And I can focus a lot better on that than without me bleeding and almost passing out.”

“Right, sure, Doyle, do what you need. I need a drink, if you don’t mind.”

“Not at all. Jameson, show him where everything is.” With Lucia’s help, we walked to a small room that I often used for when Doc needed to fix things up on the men.

“Thank you,” she whispered as she held my hand, which I found far too sweet. I had been shot plenty of times and each time, I managed just fine without her clutching to me. But it was rather endearing that she didn’t want to let go.

“For what?”

“Stopping my dad.”

“Hey,” I told her, cupping her cheek and turning her head to look at me. “Your dad might do things a certain way, but that doesn’t mean it flies here. I know you were used to him and how he handled things, but I’m not built the way he is.

“I told you I would always value your voice, that goes before that man too. He’s my father-in-law, and I will respect him as such, but he’s also the man who controls the other half of the city that I’ve longed for. I’m not going to say that having his daughter is far better, because that would make it seem like I don’t care about you at all.”

“I know, Trevor. And I have no problem speaking up. I have no problem taking on roles I need to in order to protect my family or loved ones.”

“So I saw. Which, by the way, is something I didn’t care for.”

I chuckled as she rolled her eyes.
