The wicked smile he wore grew. Frost got the feeling Lucifer laughed at him. “You will. Everyone knows me. I’m a bit of a salesman around here.”
Goddamn. Frost bet he was successful as hell. He was ready to buy whatever Lucifer was selling. “Oh. Okay.” Frost sounded dumb as fuck. This was an odd interaction. Of course, he’d had a lot of those since coming to town.
Lucifer cocked his head, as if listening to a voice only he could hear. “We’re about to be interrupted. I’ll see you around.”
Frost nodded. “Yeah. Okay. See you.”
Lucifer stepped around him and disappeared around the corner while Frost still stood, dumbfounded.
Waylon came through the door. There was a deep line between his eyebrows, as if annoyed or stressed. Waylon always looked like the weight of the world sat on his shoulders. He went from dark to light as soon as he saw Frost. A bright smile lit his face. “Just who I was looking for.”
“Me?” Why in the hell was everyone looking for him tonight? “I can’t imagine why. I’m boring as hell.”
Waylon laughed. It was a deep sound that made Frost smile. “That’s bullshit. This town has seen more excitement since you showed up than it’s seen in years. In fact, that’s why I’m here. I came to walk you to your car. If there’s a third cobra around, I want to be there, and then we’re going straight to the corner store to get lotto tickets.”
Frost smiled so hard, his cheeks hurt. “I’d agree to those terms if I didn’t already know every ounce of luck I have is bad luck.”
Waylon’s expression was sweet. “Meh. I think Wulfe will change that for you.”
He thought Waylon was right, but he hated to hope. Frost grabbed his coat. “Well, since you’re here.” He laughed. “I’m ready to go see if lightning will strike three times if you are.”
Waylon motioned toward the door. “After you.”
As he headed for the door, Frost pulled on his jacket. Waylon reached past him and opened the door. Affection swelled in Frost’s chest. Waylon seemed like one of those guys who took care of everyone else. Frost hoped his life wasn’t all work. Someone like him deserved a happy home life.
“You’re a nice person.” Waylon’s quietly spoken words made Frost feel like Waylon could read his mind.
He fought a blush. “I don’t know how to respond to that. It’s not a compliment I get. Not that I get a ton of compliments.” Frost snapped his teeth together. He sounded like he pushed for more.
A soft chuckle rumbled from Waylon. “I think everyone is equally uncomfortable with compliments. But I also think people don’t get told enough about their good traits. It’s an ugly world.”
Frost had a feeling Waylon had seen some stuff. They reached his SUV. Frost held his breath as he opened the door. Waylon checked the back while Frost checked the front. He blew out a relieved sigh. “Snake free.”
Waylon nodded. “That’s good. Lock your doors on the way home.”
A huge grin snapped to Frost’s lips. “Do snakes open doors?”
Unfortunately, Waylon didn’t laugh the way he hoped. “There’re a lot worse things out here than snakes.”
Frost nodded. He understood Waylon thought this was important. “I always keep them locked while driving. Thank you for worrying about me. It’s been a really long time since anyone has.”
It was Waylon’s turn to look uncomfortable. Or maybe uncomfortable wasn’t exactly how he looked. It was more like discomfort mixed with sadness. His gaze moved over Frost’s shoulder, as if he couldn’t look at him anymore. “You’re one of ours now.”
That was nice. Frost had never felt like he belonged.
“Gemini is probably waiting for you.”
Just the sound of Gemini’s name had Frost smiling. “Yeah. I guess I should go. Thanks again for looking out for me. See you around.”
Waylon dipped his chin. “Drive safe.”
Frost climbed inside his SUV. Waylon closed the door behind him and stood there until he heard the doors lock. Frost thought about their interaction the whole way home. There was a melancholy about Waylon. Frost worried about him and made a vow to try to get to know him better. It was possible he needed a friend as much as Frost had when he moved here. As Frost pulled into his driveway and spotted Gemini’s work truck, he forgot everything else. The giddiness was back. In seconds, he would be in those sexy tattooed arms. Frost couldn’t get there fast enough.
There was nothing rustic about Frost’s cabin. His spare key had been exactly where Frost said it would be. Gemini put it back despite his best judgment. With Frost still working, Gemini had some time to kill. He gave himself a tour. The place had five bedrooms and an upstairs loft that could be used for anything and overlooked the living room. It was stuffed with countless books and a couple of squishy-looking chairs that were probably perfect for reading for hours without any back pain. Everything was high end, including the shower. It was obvious the place had cost a fortune. Frost must have made big money back in Boston. He couldn’t imagine Wulfe’s tiny general hospital paid anywhere near as much. Gemini felt a hint of guilt over that. No doubt it was the pull of his mate that called Frost here. Still, Frost obviously felt he could afford this place, so Gemini wasn’t too worried about stealing him away to the other side of thecountry. Life would be better for Frost here anyhow. These were his people.
He felt Frost coming. Gemini stopped pacing and eyeing everything. He stared at the door. His hunger grew by the second. Then the door opened, and their gazes met. The barely pinned beast inside him roared to life. They met halfway. Frost tore at his clothes as Gemini tried to keep his unnatural strength at bay. He could easily rip Frost’s scrubs to shreds and already be inside him. Instead, he did things the slow, human way. But the instant he had Frost nude, he swept the man from his feet and headed for the bedroom.
During Gemini’s tour, he had found Frost’s fun drawer. He had already tossed the bottle of lube he found there onto the bed. Gemini needed Frost to stay in the moment. He would feel Gemini’s bite. Gemini had to keep him as aroused as possible if he wanted Frost to not question it. Once he had Frost beneath him, he wasn’t worried. He felt Frost’s hunger. It was almost crippling. Gemini kissed a path down Frost’s body.
