“Fuck. Fuck,” I hiss more fiercely this time.
Before I can think about what I’m doing, I jump off the edge of the building as the vampire reaches where I am about to land. As they pass, I land right behind them, reach out, grab the arm with the knife, and twist their arm behind their back.
Jordan turns around quickly, and his posture becomes defensive as he takes in the sight that greets him.
“You fucking sneaky weasel,” I hiss in the vampire’s ear. “Trying to stab someone in the back like a fucking coward.”
“He’s a filthy werewolf. Who cares?!”
I pull tighter on their arm, causing them to hiss in pain. “You’re avampireattacking awerewolfunprovoked, unaware, and without a fair fight. Plenty of people will care, you idiot. You’ll start a fight that will lead to him potentially dying, giving the wolves a perfect excuse to come after you and any that try toprotect you. Then the death of not only him will be on your head and the vampires who fight with you. Get the point now?”
I look towards Jordan to find a look of consternation on his face, but his posture is now more relaxed—not completely though—with his hands back in his jean pockets as he watches. He says nothing, allowing me to handle the situation.
“It would be worth it,” the idiot I’m still holding hostage yells now.
With quick and efficient strikes, I twist his arm until the blade begins to fall from their hand and catch it as I kick my foot into the back of their knees, causing them to crash harshly into the pavement. In a blink of an eye, I have their blade held against their throat hard enough to nick the skin and cause a tiny stream of blood to course down their jugular.
I bend at the waist to bring my mouth close to their ear. “You clearly have no concern for the lives of others, so tell me why I should have any concern for yours and not kill you right here and now?”
The vampire stiffens even more causing more blood to flow down his neck but doesn’t say a thing. Pity. I would have enjoyed a little more verbal sparring with this one. He would have made it so easy too with how idiotic he is.
With two more quick movements, I hit the vampire in the temple with the back of their blade hard enough to knock them unconscious, and then, for good measure after they lay flat on their stomach on the pavement in front of me, stab the knife in their kidney and leave it there. They’ll have a lovely time when they wake up. Seems like a lovely night for kidney stabbing apparently.
“Guess I was the damsel in distress this time, and you were my knight in shining armor,” Jordan states causing me to jerk my gaze away from the vampire on the ground in front of meand towards him to see he has a small smirk lifting the corner of his mouth.
I smile at him. “Yes, and you make such a pretty damsel in distress, too. It’s extremely hard not to jump in and save your ass.”
He gives out a hearty chuckle. “I can safely say I’ve never seen such a beautiful, sexy, and badass knight with curves that call out to a man quite like you before.”
My smile widens. “Eric wouldn’t try to argue with you on that point? He has some nice curves, I think.”
A smile graces his face this time as he stares at me in amusement. “No, I don’t think he would. But I’ll let him know what you think of him and his girlish figure.”
We go silent as our smiles fade and we look at each other for what feels like an eternity but is likely five seconds tops. He jerks his head to the left towards an alley that will provide some privacy requesting that I follow him. I hesitate for a split second before doing so.
Once in the dark alley and away from any prying eyes, I ask, “What are you doing out here all alone, Jordan?” I know I said it wasn’t my concern—a.k.a not my business—earlier, and that I realized I was being a hypocrite, but my curiosity and noisiness gets the better of me.
“I could ask you the same thing, darling,” he responds.
“I’m on patrol. Now stop deflecting.”
“Saw through that, did you? I’m out on a walk.”
“Without any other wolves to guard you?’
“I don’t need a bodyguard all the time. I am capable of protecting myself.”
I raise my eyebrow as if to say “Really?” after what just happened out on the street behind us a minute ago.
“Don’t look at me like that,” he grumbles. “I was caught up in my thoughts for a second, but if they would have gottenany closer, my wolf would have sensed it to where I would have been able to stop them before they could have done any harm.”
“If you say so,” I retort.
“I do,” he responds as he slowly comes towards me. His hand comes up to cup the side of my face, pausing for a second to assess if I am okay with him touching me, and he stares intently into my eyes. “Thank you, though, for the help, darling. I do appreciate it.”
“It was a nice change for once, me saving your ass and not the other way around,” I smirk at him.I should be pulling away from his touch. Anyone could walk by and see and this isn’t exactly me keeping my distance if I allow him to get close enough to touch me. But I don’t, basking in the warmth of his hand on my cheek and the roughness of his palm.
“Mmmm,” is all the response he gives. He steps back just a step and places his hand back in his pocket.
