Over the phone, Hubrie hissed. “I knew she was a bitch!”
“You knew?” Duke snarled.
“She was only passive-aggressive the one time I saw her with Nat,” Hubrie said. “No outright threats at that point.”
“What did she do today?” Duke asked.
Nat paled. “She called me a whore and—”
“Terminate her immediately,” Duke snapped at Hubrie. “Pack up her things, escort her out. If she’s not in the building, make sure she doesn’t come back.”
Nat gaped. “But you didn’t even hear everything!”
“Well, tell me,” Duke said, two hundred percent done with Kylie’s crap.
“She found out that Wanda’s also a demon,” Nat mumbled.
“Fuck.” Duke rubbed his temples. “Hubrie, put a tail on her too.”
Nat’s mouth fell open. “That’s... You don’t think I’m exaggerating? You don’t think doing all that is too much?”
“Nat. Sweetheart.” Duke ended the call and stuffed his phone into his pocket. Then he leaned in to cradle Nat’s face. “My priority is to keep you and Wanda safe. Am I pissed? Yes. Do I want to get out there and destroy something with my bare hands? Also yes. But I know that you and Wanda need me more than anything else right now.”
“But your staff—”
“Is just my staff. If someone demeans you, they’re gone. No questions asked.”
Duke wanted to punch whoever had put that look on Nat’s face. The look that said Nat didn’t think anyone would go to such lengths for him.
Nat blinked hard. “O-oh. But what if I abuse your trust?”
“You won’t; I believe in you.” Duke waited for Nat to nod. “C’mon, let’s get some pizza to go. We’ll eat in your nest instead.”
Nat cheered up, walking with a tiny spring in his step.
They went to Duke’s favorite pizza place—a hole-in-the-wall pizza shop with several thin-crust pizzas laid out, and more on a menu that you could order. Duke ordered four whole pizzas to go. Nat picked the toppings on two of the pizzas, and Duke picked the toppings on the other two.
While they waited for the pizzas to be ready, Duke hauled Nat onto his lap and made faces at Wanda over Nat’s shoulder.
“She’s adorable,” he whispered in Nat’s ear.
Nat blushed a pretty pink. “She’s my everything.”
That would change in the future, but Duke didn’t mention that. He ran his fingers over Nat’s belly, knowing that Nat’s pants were black for a very good reason. They were already soaked through with Duke’s cum; Duke would put another load in him sometime this afternoon, when he squeezed out some free time.
They were heading back to the office when Nat twitched.
Duke frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“I thought I saw something.” Nat had paled, his breathing coming quickly.
It was worrying enough that Duke stopped. “What was it?”
Except Nat grabbed his hand and pulled him along faster than before. “I thought—I thought I saw Giblin.” His voice shook. “But maybe it’s just someone who looked like him. He’s not there anymore.”
Giblin. His ex, the one who had crushed his fingers.
Duke lengthened his strides to match Nat’s, looking around. He wasn’t sure what he was searching for, aside from a cruel alpha. But no one seemed to match that description.
