“Trevon? If we had a son, would you want him to play football?” she asked thoughtfully.

“Well, it was a great game for me. Definitely helped me to find myself and support myself. But I won’t push any sport on my kids. If they want to play, that’s wonderful. If they don’t, that’s okay too. I want them to find what makes them happy.”

“I love that,” she smiled sadly. He stopped, turning her to face him.

“Hey, what’s up, babe?”

“It’s nothing. Not really. I mean, I just remember saying to my dad that I wanted to be a teacher or a nurse, maybe even a doctor one day, and he told me how stupid that was. I was adecent student in high school. I didn’t get the chance to go to college, but I wanted to.”

“Then do it,” smiled Trevon.

“How? I’m stuck here for the foreseeable future.”

“No, you’re not,” he said, kissing her. “You can begin by taking classes online. We can even give you another name if you want.”

“Like Millicent Marks,” she grinned.

“I personally think that’s a perfect name,” he laughed.

“It seems weird. Millicent Marks, like Tillie Tilbury.” Trevon burst into laughter, bending at the waist with that one.

“I didn’t even think about that at their wedding.”

“Oh, she did,” smiled Millicent. “The night before the wedding, she was begging Leo to change his last name. She was kidding, but I could feel her pain.”

“How could you feel her pain?” he asked.

“I-I was thinking about us dating even then,” she said, blushing. Trevon lifted her off her feet, kissing her passionately in the middle of the pathway.

“That makes me very happy to hear,” he said, kissing her repeatedly. “But for the record, I think Mrs. Millicent Marks has a very nice ring to it. I’m proud to introduce you to the entire world.”

“Really?”

“Positive,” he smiled.

“Even though I’m the daughter and sister of criminals?” she asked. He chuckled, shaking his head.

“You’re just you, Millicent. You’re not them.”

“I love you so much, Trevon,” she said, kissing his face.

“Ditto, babe. I wish my parents and granny had met you. They would have loved you.”

“I wish I could return the compliment, but I’m not sure how my family would feel about us. I never dated anyone when I was living with them.”

“I only care how you feel about me,” he said, kissing her again. He looked up at the sky, grinning as sprinkles of water hit his face. “Looks like our afternoon rainstorm is on time.”

“Let’s see if we can outrun it.”

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Remember, you two say nothing,” said Kari, giving Miller and Nathan a stern look. “You’re here as our law clerks.”

“What the hell does a law clerk do?” asked Nathan, staring at Miller.

“Don’t ask me. Most days, I’m not sure what a lawyer does.”

“Thanks, babe,” smirked Kari.
