“Are you ready for the week?” I ask, reaching up and holding both of her upper arms.
After blowing out a breath, she nods. “I think so. Hit me with it. What do we need to attend now?”
“We have a few dinner meetings to attend, usually with clients. Next week is when we have two of the bigger events.”
She nods, biting the side of her lip. I reach up and tip her chin up gently, making sure she looks me in the eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m like a bumbling idiot at these things.”
I shake my head. “I think you did a great job at the last one. And for someone who hasn’t grown up with it all, you’re a natural. It was nice to have an excuse to leave though.” For all the drama that night, Jack’s doctor had done a great job. He’d probably come out with minimal scarring. But I’m still surprised his wound was so deep from a sharp bracelet.
Dani closes her eyes and nods, making the temptation to lean down and kiss her much harder. “I’ll be fine when it gets here.”
A car pulls up and we turn to see the limo stop next to the curb. This is my chance, so I tip her head back, leaning down and pressing my lips to hers. I use my arms to draw her in closer, and I’m surprised when she’s holding just as tightly.
I’ve never enjoyed kissing someone this much. There’s a hint of vanilla and the way we fit together just works.
Cheers ring out and we break apart to see her roommates walking up. “Looks like someone is winning tonight and it’s not just the Breeze,” Kenzie says, grinning at us.
“Leave them alone,” Evie says, smiling as she walks past us and in through the front door.
Millie is all giggles as she follows the other two. We wait for them to close the door and then the porch light illuminates, causing us to laugh.
“I’ll call you tomorrow,” I say, trying to wrap up my growing feelings for the woman standing before me.
“Sounds good. Sleep well,” Dani says, her eyes bright.
As I walk slowly back to my car, I know sleep probably won’t be in my future. There’s a woman I’m falling for, and she’ll be the star of my dreams tonight.
CHAPTER28
Dani
Watching Miles walk toward his car, I’m riding an emotional rollercoaster. I’m pretty sure he’s the best kisser I’ve ever met. Like, I might be able to fly at this point from all the activity his kiss has started in my body.
Then there’s the realization that he only kissed me when my roommates showed up, not when we were alone in the parking garage, so it’s all for show.
But that was one of our rules, right? I shouldn’t be getting mad about something we both agreed to. And the fact that he’s keeping to it shows the kind of guy he is. He’s a unicorn kind of guy. One that I thought was a myth until I met him.
I hate the rules.
Why can’t I just lock my heart up and finish with our agreement? That would be the easiest and most pain-free way of getting through this. Maybe it would be easier if he wasn’t thoughtful, or did things like invite my brother and his wife along to the hockey game.
I stride inside once his car is long gone, struggling to get up the stairs as all the energy has left me. Why am I acting like he just broke up with me rather than reveling in that amazing kiss?
I sit down on my bed and stare at the engagement ring on my finger. My guess is it’s a grandmother’s or someone in the family. With this all being fake, why would he give me something that would probably mean a lot to his future wife?
Even the word in my brain has me wanting to cry. Because I don’t have a chance of that title.
I curl up under my covers and try to breathe. I should’ve turned off the lights when I walked in, but they’re still blazing above me, and I don’t want to move.
“Good night,” Kenzie says, as she walks past. Maybe if I’d been facing away from the door, she wouldn’t have come in. “What’s up?”
I force a smile. “It was a good night. Just trying to wind down.”
She gives me a wide grin. “Um, it was a great night. If only I’d had someone to share a passionate kiss with like you,” she says, poking me in the shoulder.
“Passionate? I don’t know if we’re to that point, or if we’ll ever be.”
