“Of course. I mean, it looks great on your hand.”
“What I mean is, you didn’t by chance purchase it at the store, did you?”
“No.”
There’s silence for a moment and she says, “That’s what I was afraid of.”
I rub the back of my neck, wishing I could see her face in person. “Afraid of what?”
“That this ring has special meaning to your family and I’ll be wrecked if I lose it.”
“Dani, you’ll be fine. It fits well and it works for the purposes. Although, I thought I’d have a moment to plan out a proposal so we’d have a story.”
She laughs and says, “If you’d proposed in my mother’s kitchen, there would’ve been an uproar and we still would be there. My mother’s interrogation tactics are solid.”
I laugh along with her. “I don’t doubt it.”
Several moments of silence pass between us and I speak again. “Since we’re not busy with the mixer this weekend, do you want to go somewhere? A movie, maybe?”
Why does it feel odd to be asking her out even though we’ve been spending so much time together?
Probably because I want things to be real between us now. Of all the women I’ve dated, and there really haven’t beenthatmany I was interested in or wanted to spend more time with, and Dani falls into both. Tanya and I would take breaks from seeing each other for at least a week at a time. It seems like the more days pass, I can’t imagine why I would need a break with Dani.
“I actually promised my roommate I’d stay in and watch the hockey game.”
“Which hockey game?” In the city of Boston, there are a number of great hockey teams.
“NHL. Boston Breeze. She’s kind of a crazy fan.”
Grinning, I think through the options. “What if we make it an event and go to the game?”
Dani laughs. “Um, that would be great, but getting tickets to a playoff game this late would break my bank account.”
“No need for that. It’ll be my treat.”
With a groan, Dani says, “You’re not paying for my ticket to a hockey game. After all you’ve already paid for—”
“What if I don’t pay for it but I know someone who can get us the tickets.”
A healthy pause follows, and she finally says, “Well, then I wouldn’t feel so bad.”
I laugh, shaking my head at the idea. “Okay, would all your roommates like to join?”
“I’m not sure about Millie’s schedule, but it could be a fun night out with the roommates. Let me know the details and where to meet you.”
When I hang up the phone, I dial Eliza, our business manager. Because the only way Dani is going to let me off the hook is if she thinks I didn’t buy them.
CHAPTER25
Dani
Idon’t want to be “that” girl, but having connections like Miles does makes life a little more fun. Obviously we would’ve made the night memorable by hanging out to watch the Boston Breeze go against the Cincinnati Sabers at home, but there is something about sports in Boston.
Going to a Red Sox game is one of the ultimate highs in this city because the people love the game and love the team. The Boston Breeze is up there and gaining notoriety after several seasons with a strong lineup.
And Kenzie is practically freaking out every time I say anything about it.
Millie’s boss said she could take the night off, which is great because the girl deserves a break.
