What would he do if it failed?
Would she ask to be taken to a human town and learn to live among them? The idea of letting her go had both its pros and cons.
He wouldn’t want to let her go, in case she figured out another way to get home. They could figure out something together, a new plan – he was used to being met with failure. He’d sulk for a while, but if he kept her, the potential was more probable than if he were alone.
She also had a lot of magic he could consume, but he’d completely lost the enthusiasm to eat her.
She’d gotten under his skin with her smiles, kindness, and just general mirth. The idea of snuffing out her brightness for his own greed would probably weigh on his conscious.
He didn’t regret much in his life, but he thought he’d regret harming her.
However, he would like to dump her in a town so he wouldn’t become attached to her, especially if they both ended up stuck here. They’d already been together for almost a month, and his tail was twisting into knots.
He didn’t like the idea of being a horny woman’s masturbatory scratching pole. He didn’t want to be used to fulfil some weird, fucked up desire towards a monster, only to be discarded when she grew bored or had someone attractive like herself to play with. That’s if that was her intention.
He still didn’t understand why everything had happened between them while travelling to his home.
Just because he desired her, and she had been aroused in his presence, didn’t mean she actually wanted to be his partner – in any sense of the word.
I’m her only option to get home at the moment. In the same way, she was the only potential key to his freedom. If that no longer becomes the case, she’ll want to leave my side.
Turning his gaze up to the sky, he waited for his orbs to shift to blue in sadness at that thought.
It never happened.
Merikh was just so used to being alone and rejected that he’d stopped caring. He was so used to it he never even allowed a flicker of hope to spark, so it couldn’t then be violently snuffed out like it always was.
Raewyn pursed her lips as she hacked at the carrot she was preparing for her dinner in annoyance.
He’s avoiding me,Raewyn thought as she chucked the food into the fry pan, cautiously reaching for the handle to know where to place it.
It’d been three days since she’d woken up here, and after he’d helped her make food that first day, her interactions with Merikh had become almost non-existent.
He showed her where all the food was after he placed them into their own bags. He’d given her all the tools he had, along with the ones he’d gone to obtain the following day, so she could get familiar with them for when she started working on the sun spell. He’d given her a notebook and a strange pen she wasn’t familiar with – it had a quill tip she needed to dunk in ink – and she was thankful she was able to use her elbraille spell on it.
Once she could function on her own, he ceased being near her.
I know he’s there.
He’d informed her he would be sleeping in the cave and for her to watch out for him – he didn’t want her accidentally kicking his quills. Other times, she’d call out to him, and he would approach from goodness knows where to help her.
He was there, just not in any way permanently close to her.
Now that they’d arrived at his home, the constant separation was getting to her. She wanted someone to talk to, and she realised today that she kind of... missed conversing with him.
Sure, he wasn’t the most social of people, but he was a good listener and occasionally asked questions. It wasn’t one-sided, but she did most of the talking. For a person who was overtly chatty, this was a wonderful quality.
Raewyn also missed his closeness. His lingering scent was mild, since it was obvious he hadn’t spent much time living here over the years. She liked his orange and cinnamon scent and wished it was stronger, like when he was by her side.
She liked the warmth of him, and his big hand holding her up as he carried her around. Then there was his gruff, ear-tingling voice and his lulling deep breaths she could only hear whenever she was pressed against him.
They’d essentially been glued to each other’s side for a month. Now, it was like there was a void next to her.
A big, spiky, irritable void she’d enjoyed skirting around.
Pushing his buttons, asking uncomfortable questions, confusing him – Raewyn enjoyed all of it. She found his reactions, or that grunt he did, funny and cute.
She was a bunny poking a big bear who didn’t know what to do with the soft little thing annoying him.
