Leaning in, I read the other tabs, and each of them were the same thing. Everything was about illegal Omega trafficking.
I swallowed and wrapped my arms around me.
There could be several reasons Konstantin was reading such things. Maybe he was worried for his daughter if they went to Italy. If he was like any other father of an Omega, he’d be overprotective, and since it was a place where they had lived, he had personal interest in Italy. Perhaps he had a strong sense of justice and knew someone involved. Like one of the investigators.
Or one of the men arrested.
Or more than one of the men arrested.
I took off out of his office and beelined for the garden. It was none of my business. I shouldn’t have looked.
Outside, I ran my fingers over tender leaves and fragrant petals. The shining sun warmed me and pulled me out of my head. After about five minutes, I could breathe normally again. It was nothing. I’d been overreacting.
Life was fine at Birk Manor. I had a new job and was starting a new life. My days would be filled with a child’s laughter and imagination, and I’d be in this beautiful garden as much as possible. We were a half of a world away from Italy and far from any worries.
My future was as bright as a cloudless summer afternoon.
CHAPTER SIX - Konstantin
Rain slammed against the windows as I tossed and turned. I finally threw back the sheets and sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing my face. There was no way I was getting any fucking sleep tonight.
The weight of everything pressed heavily on my shoulders. Yet I had no choice but to bear it. Quill had gotten better with helping with the load, but he had far less experience running a business than I did. We were nowhere near done cleaning up all the damage my father had done over the years, and sometimes I wondered if we could ever do so.
There was no choice but to push forward though. Lillianna’s future depended on it.
To top it off, my father-in-law refused to close out all the contracts the Birk family had with the Pacettis. Quill and I wanted to consolidate, having no more partners, but Lorenzo wanted to expand to create several new subsidiaries. All covers for his illegal businesses, of course. I wanted no part of it.
Lawsuit after lawsuit. My lawyers were being run around in circles. The fucker needed to just let go.
“Fuck.” I stood and walked to lean against the frame of the French doors which led out to my balcony. Low black clouds rolled across the night sky like a neverending stampede mirroring my mood.
To top it off, it had been nearly a week since Aubrielle started working for me. A week with that luscious Omega in my home… making every excuse to leave a room when I entered it. She was always polite, but there was something under it: a hint of fear. And fuck me, I liked it.
When she hurried off, I wanted to chase her. Her sweet pear and rose scent was easy to follow through the manor. Like a wolf tracking its prey, I followed her irresistible perfume through every room she walked through each day with my dick achingly hard.
Earlier today, I watched Aubrielle outside with my daughter. They danced in the wind and then crafted a kite. They made it look like a bird and covered it in glittering stickers. Lillianna loved the kite so much, she didn’t want to part with it, and placed it on the end of her bed when it was time to go to sleep.
Aubrielle’s absolute unawareness of her immense beauty made my growing obsession with her all the more powerful. Except she was my daughter’s nanny, a person in my employ. My life was messy enough without becoming involved with not just her, but anyone.
I pushed myself away from the window and returned to bed. Pressing the heels of my palms against my closed eyes, I commanded myself to sleep.
Yet all I could see with Aubrielle’s shy smile and the creamy skin of her legs when the wind blew her skirt up earlier. I wanted nothing more than to have those curvy legs wrapped around me as I pounded into her. It was almost as if I could feel the heat of her from across the hall in her own room.
She always ran away because she felt the same thing. She had to. It was enormous, that raw attraction. Alpha and Omega.
It had been a long time since I’d been with a woman. My hand was a poor replacement for an Omega like Aubrielle. Oh how tight and wet she’d be, the little sexy noises she’d make, how she’d cling to me.
Fuck. I needed her like I’d never needed anyone else.
Something in me snapped and, with a growl, I was on my feet again and stalking out of the room. I didn’t bother withthe lights. I knew this house like the back of my hand. I knew precisely where she was sleeping.
Shadows danced along the hallway as the rain continued to pummel the earth. I blinked, and I was standing at Aubrielle’s door, throwing it open. Thunder rumbled, and as if it carried me to the foot of her bed, I stared at her half-covered by a silken sheet.
Aubrielle wore a pale pink camisole that barely contained her full breasts. Her nipples poked at the thin material as her chest slowly rose and fell. Her legs were bare, revealing much more skin than I saw earlier when her skirt flipped up from the wind. Her long hair cascaded over the edge of her pillow and her luscious lips were slightly open.
Beautiful didn’t seem like a powerful enough word for her. I gripped the edge of the footboard as I breathed her in. Sweet and pure, and so very feminine.
I could have stared at her forever. The connection I felt, like she was the other half of me. It was as if I’d known her all my life, but I didn’t. I knew very little about her. She was a stranger and yet touched the most intimate part of me.
