Page 14 of Reckless in Ruins

I can’t help the grin on my face as he cuddles me against him. “I like you.”

“You’d better. We’re going to be spending a hell of a lot more time together.”

Lifting my head to meet his gaze, I ask. “You mean while I make your new uniforms?”

He smiles. “No. I mean you and me. Us. Spending time together.”

For a moment, I panic. “Oh, no. Did I get you fired?” But wait, that’s ridiculous. If he were fired, we wouldn’t be here, in his personal chambers. He’d be packing, wouldn’t he? “Or…demoted?”

Chuckling, he says, “No, love. We’re going to be spending more time together because the queen fucking decreed it.”

My eyes blink in confusion. “Decreed it?”

“That’s what I said. Which means we can never break up. It’s the law now.”

I study his face to determine if he’s joking, but there’s no sign of that.

“Well, if it’s the law,” I croon.

“Under penalty of banishment from the kingdom,” he says. “I’m yours.”

Mine. The silent minder, the chief of the security, the most eligible bachelor in the palace, is no longer eligible. He is mine, and I am his. Mystifyingly, because the queen said so?

Whatever. I’ll take it and run with it. That’s what I do.

And then I take Uther’s hard length in hand. His low groan fills me with a deeper satisfaction than I’ve ever thought possible…he fills me with promises, and with joy, and with unlimited possibilities.

That doesn’t change the fact that I still have work to do.

But that can wait.

We have our whole lives ahead of us.
