The rest of the family left right after an early dinner to make the three-hour drive back to Sterling Mill. I was so grateful for their support, but I was even happier to have Cam to myself.
Tired but still running on an adrenaline high, we collapsed onto the sofa and turned on the television for a bit and watched a movie, but when the news came on afterward, I picked up the remote to turn it off.
“Wait!” Cam cried. “Turn it up.”
Curious, I did as she asked.
“…can confirm that Tennessee state representative Mason Washington has died. Details aren’t known at this time. Washington is the son of Robert Washington, longtime US Congressman. It’s long been thought that Mason Washington had plans to fill his father’s shoes. As we learn more, we’ll continue to share the details. Now, back—”
“Do you know him?”
“Yeah.” She looked shocked. “He was a hometown boy. Honestly, he was an ass. But he is—or was—married to Anna Nichols, who dated Chase throughout high school. Then out of nowhere, it seemed they broke up and next thing we knew, she had run off and married Mason. I’m not sure Chase has ever gotten over her.” I bit my lip. “She never seemed happy either, but maybe that was just me not wanting that for her after she broke my brother’s heart.”
“That must be what he was referring to the night we made up. He’d come over to me after the show was over, and honestly, I thought he was going to deck me for hurting you. Instead, he said something about the difference being I didn’t just up and leave for no good reason.”
“Maybe I should call him. See if he’s heard.”
Just then, her phone chimed. “It’s Bristol,” she informed me. “She wants to make sure I’d heard the news. They learned on the drive home. They’re almost to Silver Creek. She said Chase said he was fine, but he’d gone really quiet the rest of the drive.”
“I’m sure anything that brings up memories of an ex is a little weird, especially something like that,” I answered.
“Yeah. But hey,” she said, tossing her phone aside, “we’ve had enough of our own drama. I’ve got an idea that’s sure to relax us.”
“Now you’re talking,” I said, grabbing a handful of her ass as she herself up and swung around to face me.
“That’s not what I meant,” she said, laughing.
“I don’t care. Come here.” I pulled her on top of my lap.
“You know,” Cam said, as she made herself comfortable, “those orders for Max Caldwell custom pieces weren’t a show. I expect something magnificent.”
I only half listened. Her slight movements had my dick’s complete attention. “Do you now?” I mumbled as I kissed her neck.
She leaned her head to the side, granting me better access. “Mm-hmm. And I’m hoping for a few pieces for myself. For my house.”
“Really.” My hands slid under her shirt to capture her breasts.
“Mm-hmm. Maybe a couple of new end tables.”
I pulled her shirt over her head and kissed the creamy flesh not covered by her bra.
“Maybe a headboard.”
I stood, and her legs automatically wrapped around my waist. “I think I need some inspiration.” I grinned as I carried her into the bedroom that I’d use while I was here. As she lay on the bed, stretched out and waiting for me, I knew it didn’t matter where I was or what the furniture looked like.
Home was waiting for me anywhere I found Cam.
Epilogue
Cam
“Okay, I think that’s it.”
I looked around the room. It had taken some digging, but I’d finally gotten Trey to tell me his favorite color—green. That worked well because it also happened to be mine. It might have had something to do with Mac’s eyes.
I hadn’t gone overboard, but I’d found little ways to make sure the cabin had touches of it to make him feel at home. The comforter on the bed had large, dark green panels mixed with smaller light and dark brown ones. Masculine, but something nicer than just a solid color. The plates in the cabinet were a lighter green that faded into dark gray edges. There were other little touches here and there, but nothing that screamed,Hey, we heard your favorite color is green, so we went overboard.
Mac looked up from the television set he’d just hooked up to the satellite dish that was installed earlier in the day. “It looks great. I think he’s going to love it.”
