“That’s part of it,” she replies angrily. “Fine, Soren. Judge me if it will make you feel better.”

She moves swiftly toward the clothes on the floor and I step to block her path. Her eyes narrow in challenge.

Will it make me feel better to slap a label on her, on this person who seems to shrug off every description I try to hand out?

“I want to understand,” I grind out.

“It won’t help you. You’ll still be angry.” She throws up her hands in despair. “Why are you alwaysso angry?”

It’s never been about her; she’s just a prime target when I’m not able to hurt the person I’m most angry with. Shit, two people. Myself and my father.

The sound of her moaning in the video cuts off when the screen locks and I don’t have the heart to open it back up, to force her to face what she’s done.

She isn’t ashamed. I see it clearly. Or if she is, she’s got it buried down too deep for anyone to notice.

I’ve got to know. “Why did you start doing it?”

It’s not even as though finding out about the camera work makes a difference, she’s right. It doesn’t bring any kind of embarrassment on our already tarnished family name.

“Survival.” Her answer is simple. “I needed a quick way to get money. My debts were piling up and like hell anyone was going to give me a handout. Or are you trying to ask if I ever take on a guest? People will pay more for that than they will for videos.”

I ignore her dig, my nerves rattling. “That’s not everything.”

“Of course it’s not the whole story,” she snaps. “But what makes you think I want to tell you? Especially when you burst into my room?”

Should I be embarrassed by my behavior? I try to find it but there are no shreds of shame for me to grab onto. There is only the anger, as she called out.

She’s right to.

I force a deep shuddering inhale before saying, “I want to understand. Why would you subject yourself to this? It’s not like you. Surely you had other ways of getting money.”

Her eyes flash with fire. “How would you know? It’sjustlike me.”

“As much as it kills me to admit, I’ve gotten to know you over the last week. You aren’t the kind of woman who revels in being watched. If anything, you’re the opposite.”

She flinches. “Maybe I might have done it as a punishment to my mom, like you act out to punish your father.”

Ouch. Score one for Gilli. She’s young but she knows where to cut.

“Doubtful.” The word is a growl.

“I know what you’ve been doing. I know why you came in here trying to force me to watch myself.” At least she’s not denying it anymore. “Being shitty to me isn’t going to absolve you. Finding someone who sins more than you do won’t be your act of penitence.”

I huff out a laugh. “You think I’m looking for absolution?”

“I think you’re looking forsomethingand you still haven’t found it. Tough shit, Soren. You’re like everyone else in this world,” she seethes.

I take a step closer to crowd her, hoping she’ll be intimidated and back down. If she keeps challenging me then we might not make it out of this room alive.

I’m not so far gone to ignore the fact that her breath has quickened, her chest rising and falling, and my cock straining to get to her.

I could yank that towel off and find out for myself what the trio of freckles looks like.

Her knees hit the back of the bed and she drops. Good.

I move, covering her body with mine in the next heartbeat.Stop.

But neither one of us says it, because neither one of us will mean it.
