"Please," I murmured softly and I watched her anger unravel.

"Fine," she gave in and looked at me expectantly like she was ready to listen. But this subject was way too sensitive to discuss in a public place.

"Where are you staying?" I asked, not liking that Matthew was still watching us with interest.

"In an apartment nearby."

I wasn't in the clear yet but I was hoping I was one step closer.

"Could I come by tonight to talk?" I didn't want to spend another night contemplating what her reaction was going to be and how I would handle it.

She made me wait while she considered my request. The anxious uncertainty that settled in my stomach reminded me that I wasn't in control of this situation. She was in complete control.

I held her gaze while she looked at me thoughtfully.

"Fine," she answered and I felt relieved.

Not liking how on edge I was feeling, I shoved my hands into the front pockets of my jeans. She gave me the address.

"I'll be there at seven," I told her. She nodded. I couldn't stop myself from shooting one last glare at Matthew, who had witnessed the whole exchange. His expression was unreadable.

I raked a hand through my hair as I walked away. At least I wouldn't have to wait much longer to see how this played out. I pushed my tongue against my lip ring, trying to work through my agitation.

There were only two choices. She would understand that her brother's warning had pushed me to look her up on the internet. Or she wouldn't and I would lose her.

My throat tightened as I swallowed. If I were a betting man, I would bet against myself.
