"I'm not. Pretending to be my boyfriend doesn't give you the right to meddle in my affairs."
He smirked at me. "What if I don't want to pretend anymore?"
"I'm not sure I know what you're trying to say." I arched an eyebrow at him.
"We have already established we have a mutual attraction."
Despite my resistance, I couldn't stop the tinge of heat that traveled up my cheeks. There was nothing I could say that would take back what I had said last night.
"So what?" I gave him a dismissive shrug.
"I like you."
"Your actions this past week gave me a different impression," I said, finding it hard to believe. He hadn't called me the entire week. Those weren't the actions of a guy who was interested.
He sighed. "I know your type."
I frowned. I was a type?
"You like to be in control, but you like a guy you can't walk all over."
My frown deepened. Was I that easy to read?
"You were playing me?" I asked, not liking the fact the tables had been turned.
"No more than you played me."
He was right. I couldn't complain when I had done the same thing.
"So what changed suddenly?" I asked, still not trusting what he was saying.
"I don't like the fact Ryan is becoming a nuisance."
"He is annoying," I agreed. I ignored the warm feeling in my chest when I heard the protectiveness in his voice. Ryan would have pestered me more had Matthew not played the part of the new guy in my life. "But I'm sure after last night he got the message loud and clear."
"I'm not so sure of that," he admitted. "I don't think he's going to be so easily deterred."
He paused for a moment. "We can get to know each other better, and it'll keep Ryan off your back."
I considered his proposal. This was the perfect time to brush him off, to stop anything from developing between us. But I couldn't. He was an enigma I couldn't read, and even though I didn't like that I didn't know what he was going to do next, it was exciting.
For once I was willing to relinquish some control to see what happened. Besides, I remembered the kiss we had shared last night. The chemistry between us was too addictive for me to walk away.
"What do you say?" he prompted. Suddenly he was closer and it became harder to think.
My eyes flickered to his lips. I remembered our kiss and how it had lit me up. The space between us became magnetic, pulling me closer, but he didn't touch me, making it clear if this was what I wanted I would have to make the first move.
Slowly I lifted a hand and slid it behind his neck, pulling him closer. I pressed my lips to his. The moment our mouths connected I felt a thrill of excitement spread through me.
Our mouths fused as his tongue swept against mine. I locked my hands around his neck as his hands went to my hips. Our tongues danced together. With one kiss I felt swept away, unable to form a thought.
"I take that as a yes," he said when he ended the kiss, still with his hands on my hips. My skin tingled beneath his touch. It took me a few seconds to come back down to earth, and I nodded. He was irresistible.
"You hungry?" he asked.
"Yeah, I haven't eaten today."
Feeling a little embarrassed at the effect he had on me, I stepped back, needing space between us.
