Lex takes an exaggerated step back. "I'll catch the next one. You're pumping out enough alpha musk to choke a bear, and I just had nachos I'd like to keep down."

Nikolai's jaw clenches so hard I can hear his teeth grinding. Without another word, he steps into the elevator. As the doors slide closed, I catch one last glimpse of his furious expression.

An awkward silence falls over the room as the elevator hums, Lex not-so-subtly mashing the call button to the point I wouldn't be surprised if it jams.

Nowthat'sa thought.

I'm acutely aware that I'm still only wearing a blanket, and that the entire place reeks of arousal—both his and mine. My heat isn't helping matters, making every nerve ending feel like a live wire.

Lex clears her throat. "So... sorry about interrupting whatever freaky shit you?—"

I cut her off by wordlessly pointing at the elevator doors as they slide open again. She takes the hint immediately, slipping inside with one last awkward stare in my direction before the doors close.

Finally alone, I let out a frustrated growl and throw myself back onto my nest. The impact sends Nikolai's scent wafting up from the torn pieces of his coat woven throughout the blankets and pillows, and I have to resist the urge to bury my face in it.

What the hell was I thinking?

On one hand, I should be relieved the interruption came when it did. Getting intimate with my captor is probably not the wisest move, especially when said captor is the most dangerous warlord in the Outer Reaches. Not to mention the fact that I hate him.

My body throbs with unfulfilled need, the ache between my thighs almost unbearable now. I can still taste his blood on my tongue from when I bit him, still feel the ghost of his fangs on my throat.

"Fuck," I groan into the empty room, pressing my thighs together.

This is torture.

Part of me hopes the Knight succeeds at tearing down the tower and puts me out of my misery, because if I'm actually desperate enough to crave Nikolai fucking Vlakov's cock, I've passed the point of no return.

NIKOLAI

The ground trembles beneath my feet as I storm across the tarmac, my jaw clenched so tight I can feel a muscle twitching. Lex jogs to keep up, that mangy mutt of hers loping alongside her and barking the whole damn time like she's trying to give me news too.

"How long has this been going on?" I snarl, not slowing my pace.

"Fuck if I know," Lex pants. "The pit was fine a few hours ago, then one of the other guys brought it to my attention. Thought it was just throwing another tantrum at first, but then?—"

A bone-rattling roar cuts her off, and I feel it in my fucking teeth. We round the corner of a storage unit, and I freeze.

"Holy shit."

The pit is... wrong. Misshapen. One side bulges outward like a tumor, the earth churned up and scattered in massive clumps. And there, in the center of the chaos, looms the Knight, head and shoulders above the edge of the goddamn pit.

The Knight's massive frame is coated in mud and grime, but those eerie blue eyes still glow with unholy light from the iron mask. As I watch, he slams his metal fist into the outer edgeof the part of the pit he's dug away. The ground shakes and a shower of dirt rains down on him.

But the fucker isn't digging, not in any methodical sense. It's pure, primal rage. Each blow sends more earth cascading down, widening the pit. And with each strike, he's closer to the tower.

Toher.

"Boss!" Diesel's panicked voice snaps me out of my daze. He comes sprinting up, out of breath and wild-eyed. "We tried to stop it, but?—"

"Youtried?" I cut him off, my voice dripping with disdain. "What the fuck does that mean? Did you use the chains? The gas? The fucking tranq guns?"

Diesel shifts nervously. "Well, see, the thing is?—"

Another ear-splitting roar drowns him out. I whirl back toward the pit just in time to see the Knight lunge upward. His metal claws dig into the loosened earth, and for one heart-stopping moment, I think the fucker's actually going to haul himself out.
