“When,” I ask quietly. “When are you abandoning your underage kid to fend for himself?”

He’s really setting the standard for whatnotto do.

“As soon as possible. You’ll both be better off without me.” He tosses kicks at the dropped tool sending it flying across the floor to lodge under one of the tables.

Cursing under his breath, he storms into the house, slamming the door behind him.

“That went well,” I grumble. My own steps fall heavy as I head back to the camper.

Damn him.

I just have to make sure Devon knows it isn’t his fault.

Shit, I don’t think it’s mine either.

Dad is just…broken.

Chapter Forty-one

Blue

“You have got tobe fucking kidding me.” I stare at the case log on my desk. “I can’t go to Billings,” I groan.

My boss leans over his desk.

Not sure how he manages with the gut he boasts.

“Big Hereford show and auction. Then a rodeo. Pack a bag, Pierce.” He waves his arm that somehow doesn’t burst the seams of his skin tight shirt.

“Don’t they have an agent on the east side? I know they do.” I’ve worked with him in the past.

“Unavailable. What’s the matter? You used to love those long trips.” My boss squints over his thick cheeks.

“That was before I was married.” Now I don’t want to leave Libby.

“That was your mistake, not mine, Pierce,” he grunts, then turns his monitor to block my view.

Guess that conversation is done.

Maybe I should just quit?

Wow, that’s a crazy thought.

I’ve never once considered it before today.

My wife does that to me. She’s a wild ambrosia that pulls me into her sweet embrace.

I could get lost there.

As long as nothing big happens on the farm, the possibility of quitting and working with her full time is a very real option.

Nothing can move quickly on a time. Scaling takes months, if not years to grow in a way that stays profitable.

I have years.

But it doesn’t mean I want to be away from her. It’s the entire reason we decided to marry so early, so we wouldn’t have to spend another night alone.

Bitching under my breath, I grab my new schedule and head outside.
