Even Manny and Maiden were chattering from their covered cage, as if they understood something exciting was happening.

“I knew it!” Jilly was practically bouncing in her spot on the floor, surrounded by their rescued family. “I absolutely knew he would be perfect for this role!”

Guy’s eyebrows rose as he recognized the opening credits of the police procedural he’d guest-starred on, the surprise appearance he’d kept secret even from his wife.

“Look, you guys,” Jilly continued, addressing their menagerie with the kind of reverence usually reserved for discussing sacred texts. “Papa is about to give the performance of a lifetime, and oh, here he comes..."

His wife's expression turned dreamy. “Just look at him. He’s not creepy at all. He’s just... yearning.”

Guy’s amusement died.

He actually was, but since he had no plans of admitting this...

"I think this is more of a question of howyou'dfeel, if I became my character in real life."

"What do you—Guy!"

Jilly could only gasp in shock when he suddenly scooped her up into his arms.

"Guy, put me down!"

"No."

"This is crazy—"

"The opposite, actually, since what I have in mind isn't appropriate for our babies to witness."

When he put it that way, didn't that mean...

Oh dear.

He had indeed carried her back to their bedroom, and Jilly's heart was already racing as her husband settled her back on her feet.

"Um..."

Jilly's bemusement grew as her husband settled into the armchair next to the window like he was about to watch a...oh.

Surely not...

I mean...

But when she saw the glint in her husband's blue eyes—
