“Coffee?”Elizabeth asks as Red and his brother Colton, the family attorney, go over the information on my laptop.
“Yes, thank you.” It’s my second cup, but it’s the only thing keeping me from crawling out of my skin.
It’s all so normal.
His entire family is acting like I’m one of them now. Like I’ve been a fixture in this household for years instead of the stranger that should be up on their doorstep with nowhere to go and fucked their son all night and this morning while the fire alarm went off.
“Eat this.” Kit places a muffin in front of me and then squeezes my shoulder.
“Thanks,” I whisper as I turn to look at Red when my laptop rings with an incoming email.
I find him watching his brother leave the house with a funny look on his face. He seems to snap out of his trance and frowns when he reads my screen.
“Cami, you should see this.” He looks up in sympathy, but I knew it was coming.
“They fire me?” I grin at the nod he gives me.
“Fuck’em. I’m going to step outside to make a call.” I grab my coat, and as I pass by him to the back door, he grabs my hand and spins me so I land on his lap.
He kisses me like I’m his whole world, without a care in the world for who’s watching us.
“Hurry back. It’s warmer today, but I don’t want you getting sick.” It’s the perfect mixture of possessiveness and caring that I didn’t know I was missing in my life.
“Ok.” I stand and shrug on my coat as I open the door.
I dial Evelyn and bite my thumbnail, waiting for her to answer.
“Bitch, what the fuck!” she exclaims.
“Um, so I caught Ryan cheating with his assistant, stole his company files proving he’s committing corporate espionage, fucked the arrogant cowboy I was sent here to screw over, and have been accepted into his cult of a family.” I drag in a large breath as I let my words settle with her.
“You took screwing your client literally. I’m proud of you. Was it good?” I giggle manically.
“So good I wanna have his babies.” Evelyn stops laughing.
“Babe, you need backup?” I nod, then come to my senses cause she can’t see me.
“Hell, yes.” I cry into the phone like the lunatic I am today.
“Say less. I’m on the next flight. I’ll text you the details.” I sigh as I hang up and spin to go back inside.
“Wanna have my babies, huh?” Red grins from the open doorway, and I gulp.
I didn’t close the door behind me. Jesus fucking Christ.
“They all heard me?” He nods his head in silence.
No! Why is this my life? I cover my face with my hands as I feel my cheeks burn.
“So we should probably discuss this then.” I look up in time to see him pull my birth control out of his jeans and twirl it around his fingers.
“Why do you have those?” I step up to him and try to take them away, but he drops them on the ground and quickly stomps them.
“RED!” I watch in shock as the pack breaks apart and all the pills turn to dust under his boot.
“Darlin’, what you should be asking yourself is how long I’ve had them or, better yet, when was the last time you took one? Careful what you wish for.” He places a kiss on my gaping mouth.
Fucking hell. He’s right. I packed them when I left New York, but I haven’t touched them since I got to Texas.
