Page 60 of I've Got You

I fought the tears as I clasped his hand. “Thank you. It means a lot.” It was a wonder how Denver was close to my dad. They were like oil and water. Denver had always been warm and kind, but their friendship didn’t make a lick of sense to me.

Davis appeared by my side, and I immediately reached for him, my arm moving around his waist. In another time, another world, I would have only dreamed of having the courage to do such a thing. Fear, I decided, could go screw itself, especially when it attempted to mess with Davis. I then looked at Denver, who was observing me closely.

“Denver, have you got a drink?” Davis asked, his voice carefree, his strong fingers gripping my waist.

With a smile, Denver nodded. “I do, thanks, Davis.”

I glanced back and forth between their exchange. “You know each other?”

Davis’s lips curved upwards. “As of about thirty minutes ago officially, but we’ve chatted a couple of times on the phone making arrangements.”

I closed my gaping mouth. “Aren’t you just full of surprises?”

He shrugged good-naturedly. “I have my moments.”

Heat flared between us, which I had to force down, a mammoth task since those whispered words had been ringing around my head for the past fifteen minutes. Hell, was that all it had been? How was I meant to survive the night?

Widening his eyes a little, Davis cleared his throat. “I’ll leave you to catch up. Let me know if you need me.”

I’d always need him. I pushed that thought into the tender look I gave him and the squeeze of his fingers before he released me. He threw me a wink, and I watched his ass leave, only to drag my gaze away when Denver chuckled beside me.

“I can see why you finally opened yourself up, with a man like Davis in your life. He has a daughter too?”

Despite my embarrassment at being caught checking out my boyfriend’s ass by my godfather, a grin stretched my cheeks. “Libby’s not long turned one. She’s amazing and keeps us both happy and exhausted.”

“I’m glad. I’d love to meet her while I’m here. Perhaps I can stop by tomorrow?”

“I’d love that. Did Davis sort out a bed for you?”

He nodded. “He did. He offered to put me up, but I was more than happy at a hotel. It means I don’t have to clean up after myself.” Denver chuckled.

“Are you staying long?”

“Just a couple of days before the next jaunt.”

I took him in. He looked good, happy. “Retirement suits you.”

“I think I suit it too,” he said, beaming at me. “Let’s go and see your sister. She seems to have a few admirers.”

My gaze jerked up. Jenna was now in a conversation with a couple of guys I recognized but didn’t know. My eyes narrowed. I didn’t think so.

Denver slapped my back and laughed loudly. “Oh boy.”

“I’ll go,”Davis mumbled. I groaned and turned to my side, burying my head under the covers. Davis’s footsteps moved across the landing, and I heard him open Libby’s door and her rambling get louder.

“Da Da,” she squealed, and I imagined that was in response to Davis lifting her out of her crib.

“Geez, you stink, little lady.”

I snorted and pushed the cover off me. Bathroom, then coffee. Davis would need a hit of caffeine quickly if he was dealing with a monster poop. Before long, I had the coffee maker on, eggs boiling, and bread out ready to toast. Libby’s new favorite breakfast was egg and soldiers, something I’d never heard of before, but apparently it was a thing.

“Cot, Cot.” I looked at the doorway and a fully dressed Libby wobbled in. She was sure-footed, but as soon as she put any aspect of speed into her movements, she was hilariously wobbly, something akin to a drunken sailor.

“Hey, baby girl.” I scooped her up and gave her a cuddle, then dotted kisses over her face. “You ready for soldiers?”

She clapped enthusiastically as I took her to her high chair and strapped her in. A moment later, I placed buttered toast down for her and her sippy cup of water.
