“I know.” They got out of the truck, leaving the doors open, and he held out his hand to her. “Dance with me?”
Nancy slid into his arms, and he couldn’t help but think how she was meant to be there. They swayed together in the headlights of his truck with her head resting on his chest. When the song was over, he turned off the engine and then grabbed a blanket from the cab of the truck and laid it out on the ground. They lay together and stared up at the expanse of sky, at the millions of stars. She slipped her fingers through his and sighed happily. “This is definitely something I don’t get in Boulder,” she said.
He didn’t say anything for a long while, but then his confession slipped out. “I almost followed you.”
Nancy leaned up on her elbow. “What?”
He mirrored her so that they were now looking at each other. “To Boulder,” he said. “About six weeks into summer after you left, I told my dad that I couldn’t stand being away from you.” Colin reached out and brushed his fingers along her cheek, down her jaw. “He told me to take a weekend trip, test it out, and if I really wanted to go, they would let me.”
Nancy’s eyes turned sad. “You never came though.”
He shook his head. “I didn’t drive up,” he said. “If I had followed you and been miserable, I would have resented you, and that would have ruined any chance that a night like this could have happened.”
She leaned forward and kissed him. “I’m glad I’m here with you now.”
Colin leaned in to kiss her again, and he moved so that she was lying on her back. “This all right?” he asked.
Nancy nodded. Her eyes were big and soft, looking up at him. “Make love to me, Colin,” she said, and Colin felt his heart skip a beat. He wanted her more than he’d ever wanted any woman.
Their mouths met, and her hand fisted in his shirt, holding him close. The kiss deepened, and his hunger for her only intensified. “Should we go back to the main house?” he asked.
Nancy shook her head. “You got any neighbors out here?” she asked, although she knew the answer. She wiggled away from him enough so that she could sit up. She pulled her dress up her thighs, and he groaned out loud when she pulled it off over her head.
“Come here,” he said and almost didn’t recognize his own voice for how husky it had become. He could see Nancy shiver, could see her nipples tighten beneath the thin fabric of her bra. His mouth watered when she reached behind her to undo the closure and then eased the straps down. She dropped the bra and matching panties next to the dress. “Nance—” Colin was pretty sure he was hard enough to break concrete.
She shook her head. “You next,” she told him, indicating his shirt. He yanked off his tie and then tore the shirt off over his head. He beckoned her again, and her eyes flicked down to his jeans, making arousal jolt through him. Colin grinned and forced himself to stand up so that he could toe off his boots and unbuckle his belt. Her eyes never left him, and as he pushed his jeans and boxers down his thighs, his hands shook just a little.Calm down, man.
He dug a condom out of his back pocket and came back to the blanket, and Nancy climbed into his lap. There was a frenzy to their movements now. They were all lips and hands and sighs. Colin rolled her beneath him, fitting himself between her legs, and she moaned when he pressed himself against her. Her leg slid up around his hips, pulling him closer, and he had just enough of a mind to pull back and grab for the condom. Colin ripped it open, but Nancy sat up and took it from him. “What—?” She took the condom and rolled it down the length of him; he hissed as her hand squeezed him.Jesus, that shouldn’t be as hot as it is.
Colin kissed her deeply, and then he was pressing her back again as he reached down to guide himself into her tight heat. She was heaven itself. He thrust deep, not stopping until their bodies met. “Colin,” she moaned. He could get used to hearing her say his name like that. He rocked his hips, and Nancy clutched at his back and chased his rhythm.
Heat built low in his gut. The raw need for her washed over him, yanked at his tenuous control. He shifted his weight to his knees so that he was looking down at her, at them. Colin slid his arm behind the knee of the leg she’d wrapped around him and drove himself into her, on the edge of losing himself. Her moans and sighs wound him tighter and tighter. He couldn’t hold this much longer, but she had to go over that edge first. He needed her to.
Colin reached down between them and thumbed at that sweet spot in the very center of her, and she called her pleasure to the sky. “I’m going to—” she gasped, and it was music to his ears.
“Let go,” he groaned, and she did, head thrown back and back arched. Colin followed her over that edge, driving himself inside her, hard and fast. He did his best not to collapse on her, but she clung to him in a way that told him she didn’t mind the weight of him against her.
After a few moments, he shifted around so that he could discard the condom and lay on his back, drawing her across his chest. They were quiet for a stretch of time; Colin almost thought she’d fallen asleep. “It’s good to be back here,” Nancy said finally. “Better than I thought it would be. I never felt like I fit before, but I’m starting to think Boulder isn’t the place for me, either.”
Colin wanted to talk about this, but it wasn’t the time. Instead, he held her close and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “Be here with me now,” he told her. “We fit right here.”
She nuzzled into him, pleased. “Okay.”
SEVENTEEN
Somehow, Colin and Nancy got themselves together enough to go back to the main house, where they collapsed in his bed. The next morning, while Nancy used his shower, he slipped down to the kitchen to start coffee and rustle up some breakfast. Jessie would be bringing Bex home soon, and he wanted a meal waiting for her.
Nancy came downstairs wearing one of his tee shirts. It made him want to march her back upstairs, but there wasn’t enough time before Bex’s return. Instead, he accepted her shy kiss to his cheek and held up a steaming mug for her. She grinned. “Thank you.”
They sat together with their coffee until Jessie walked in, Bex trailing behind. Jessie’s eyes went a little wide at the sight of them, clearly having spent the night together, and Colin tried not to let it bother him. “How’d she do?” Colin asked.
“Just fine,” the woman said. “If you’ll excuse me, I have some errands to run today.”
Colin nodded. “Sure thing.”
The oven timer went off, and Bex’s eyes practically glittered with delight. “Cinnamon rolls?”
He nodded. “Only the best for my favorite girl,” he boasted. Bex wanted to help ice the cinnamon rolls, which made a bit of a mess, but after he got it all moped up and cleaned her hands, he set one in front of Nancy. “Eat up,” he told her. “You’ll need your energy for the day we’ve got ahead of us. Bex and I are going to the county fair today, and you’re coming.”
