“Are you doing anything after this?” Bennett asked.
“No. I’m off work today.”
“Me too. That was why I chose today for our practice.”
“Did you want to go do something fun then?”
“What if we went and grabbed some burgers and ate them by the falls?”
“That sounds really fun.” I put my script back into my backpack. We hadn’t even needed to look at it.
“We can run through our lines there too if you want.”
“Sure.” I stood up.
“We can take my car,” Bennett offered.
“I’m okay with that.”
We walked over to his car and climbed inside. Bennett cranked up the engine. “Want to listen to some music?”
“Sure.”
He put on some pop music and rolled the windows down. It was a hot day, and I reached my hand out the window and let the warm breeze blow over it.
We ran our lines on the ride over to the fast food place and while we waited in line at the drive-thru before we ordered burgers, fries, and chocolate shakes.
“You’re completely memorized,” I told Bennett.
“Yeah. I noticed that last night. I was able to say all my lines without looking down at my script.”
“That’s amazing.”
“It’s the first time I’ve been able to do it. It feels awesome to be able to put that script down finally.”
“I’m proud of you, Bennett. You worked hard for this.”
We got our food, and Bennett started heading toward the falls.
I pulled my burger out of the bag and started to open the wrapper.
“What are you doing?” he asked. “We’re supposed to eat those by the falls.”
“Yeah. But I’m too hungry to wait.”
He laughed. “Okay then. Feed yourself.”
“Plus. I want to eat the food while it’s still piping hot.”
“Fair enough.”
I smiled over at him. It felt amazing to be here with him like this. I just hoped my parents wouldn’t be too upset by the fact that I’d decided to stay together with Bennett. Jackilyn wouldn’t be happy about it at all.
Thinking about my family and how they’d reacted to me being with Bennett put a dark spot over our evening.
“Everything okay over there?” Bennett asked.
“Why do you ask?”
