“Is everything okay?” I asked. Jessilyn was glued to her phone, and she had a panicked look on her face.

“I hope so.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

She looked up at me. “I think Jackilyn knows we’re in this scene together. Did you talk about it openly at school?”

“Not at all. The only person I talked to about it was my uncle at his shop.”

Jessilyn’s brow furrowed. “How could she know then? Think someone from class told her?”

I shrugged. “Probably. Jackilyn has her spies everywhere.”

“I just hope she doesn’t kill me in my sleep tonight.”

“That’s a little extreme.”

She looked at me like I didn’t get it. “You don’t know my sister.”

I laughed. “You forget. I do.”

“Oh yeah. That’s right. You would know.”

That was one thing we had in common. We both understood what it was like to be close to Jackilyn.

“What’s Jackilyn saying that makes you think she knows we’re in the scene together?”

Jessilyn’s face blanched. “She says she wants to talk to me.”

Was I going to get a text like that too? I glanced at my phone. So far, I hadn’t gotten any texts from her. That was a good sign. It wasn’t like I was afraid of Jackilyn, but I didn’t enjoy her constant games either. It was exhausting. If I’d known she was like that before we’d gotten together, I never would have dated her.

“And you think she knows we’re doing the scene together?”

“Yes. She sounds mad.”

To be fair, she always sounded mad, but I wasn’t going to say that out loud. “Are you going to tell her the truth?”

“I think I’d better.”

“You should call her right now. You don’t need to be afraid of her. It’s not like it’s your fault that you got paired up with me.”

“Call her?”

“Yeah. Just tell her the truth. It sounds like she knows anyway.”

“But what if she doesn’t know and she wants to talk to me about something else?” She had a good point. We could be getting ahead of ourselves.

“Then call her and ask what she wants to talk about. Let her lead the conversation,” I suggested.

Jessilyn went quiet for a moment like she was digesting what I’d just said. “I guess I could do that.”

She pulled out her phone, tapped the screen, and then put it up to her ear. “Jackilyn? Hey. What do you want to talk to me about?” She pulled the phone away from her ear and put it on speaker.

“Coco told me that you’re partnered up with Bennett for the Drama Competition.”
