“I didn’t realize it would hurt so bad.”

Reese smiled over at me. “This is why I stay away from guys. They’re nothing but trouble.”

She pulled into the Shelley’s parking lot, and we went into the store in our formals and high heels. My awful manager was there. She gave me a questioning look but didn’t say anything to me. I hated coming in on my days off. It was always awkward, like I wasn’t supposed to be there as a shopper. Like I was slacking on the job or something.

Reese and I made a beeline to the frozen food section, and she pulled open one of the glass doors. “Mint chocolate chip or chocolate fudge brownie?”

“Chocolate fudge brownie. I need all the chocolate I can get right now.”

She pulled out a container, let the door slam shut, and then handed it over to me. “Here you go.”

We walked to the registers, but suddenly, I wanted to hide. We should have gone to one of the other grocery stores in town—I felt like I was sticking out horribly in front of my coworkers. I hoped I didn’t have mascara smeared across my cheeks from crying. “Is my makeup smudged?”

“Just a little. But that’s okay. Wear it proudly.”

I laughed. “This is so awkward. Why did I have to come to Shelley’s to buy this ice cream?”

“Technically, it was my idea since I drove you here. I didn’t think about it being awkward for you since you work here and all.”

I rubbed under my eyes, hoping I was making the smudges better instead of worse. “Is that better?”

“A bit. If you want, I can find a paper bag for you to put over your head so no one will recognize you.”

“You’re hilarious. I think I’m going to survive.” We bought the ice cream and headed back to Reese’s car. Reese’s hair was partially up, with curls cascading down her back. “Who did your hair?” I realized I’d been so caught up in dating Bennett that I hadn’t offered to get ready with Reese. Instead, I’d gotten ready with Jackilyn.

“My aunt did it for me.”

“The one who does hair?”

“Yep, my aunt Libby.”

“Reese?” We got to her car, and she unlocked it.

“Yeah?”

I opened the door and got in. “I’m sorry we haven’t been hanging out as much lately.”

“Hey, I get it. You got a boyfriend. It’s normal for you to want to spend your every waking moment with him.”

“But I don’t want that to eclipse our friendship either.”

“I don’t think anything could do that.”

“We’re still going to be roommates at Duke, right?”

She turned on her car. “I was planning on it.”

“Good.” I sighed. “What am I going to do about Bennett?”

“Girl, that’s something I can’t answer for you. You’re going to have to figure that out for yourself.”

“I was afraid you’d say that.”

“Whatever you decide to do, I’m here for you.”

“You’re the best.”

She smiled and backed out of her spot. “I know.”
