Jackilyn took another sip of the punch. “We need to talk.”
“This isn’t the time or place. I’m here with Jessilyn tonight. I should be getting back to her.”
Jackilyn set down her cup impatiently on a side table. “Just listen to me for a minute.”
“Okay, fine. What is it you want to say?”
She plucked the other cup from my hand and put it on the side table next to the one she’d just finished.
“What are you doing?”
She grabbed my hands and led me to the middle of the dance floor. “Come dance with me.”
“I don’t think this is such a great idea,” I said.
She waved away my protest like it was an annoying bee buzzing around her face. “Oh, come on. One dance won’t kill you.”
“Fine.” I didn’t like it, but I didn’t want to make a scene either.
She put her arms around my neck and stood closer than I would have liked. If I looked down, I could see straight down her dress. I kept my eyes up, gazing past her shoulder instead.
“Where’s Kellen? Shouldn’t you be dancing with him instead?”
“He’s over talking to his friends. He’s not much of a dancer.”
“Why do you want to dance with me?” I kept looking over her shoulder. I didn’t want to accidentally get a glimpse of something I didn’t need to see.
She shrugged. “I was bored. You looked like you could use the company.”
I flicked my eyes to her face. “You were wrong. I don’t need the company. I already have a date.”
She smiled wickedly at me. “Yes. But we both know how boring Jessilyn can be, and I don’t think she’s all that into you. I can tell. She’s my twin.”
I didn’t think Jessilyn was boring at all, but I knew there was no point in arguing with Jackilyn. But it was concerning that Jackilyn didn’t think Jessilyn was into me. She’d agreed to be my girlfriend, but she’d been hesitant. It had been hard to get her to agree to go to prom with me too. Jackilyn lied a lot, but this time I worried that she might be right. I moved my focus back to looking over her shoulder.
“I figured you were dying of boredom being here with her.”
The truth was, Jackilyn was the boring one. All she did was try to stir up drama. She had no depth. When I was dating her, I often found my mind wandering to other subjects like cars or what my dad was doing to sabotage his life. Now, Jessilyn was the one who held all my attention. I thought about her constantly. She always had something interesting to say. And when we were together, she had my full attention.
I didn’t want to argue with Jackilyn because I knew there was no point. She would only hold to her stance even stronger if I challenged her in any way. So why bother?
I didn’t have time to contemplate this further because Jackilyn reached up and grabbed my face with both her hands and kissed me.
Shock and then anger unfurled inside me. I pulled away from her. “What do you think you’re doing?”
